Yes, but you should ask yourself why is the number so lopsided?

Maybe because women are brought up from a young age being told what is and what isn't proper for a lady to do, and guess what playing guitar falls in the latter category for most parents.

So you take that already smaller number of people who potentially would pick up a guitar and think about them entering a male dominated field. They will have to deal with such comments such as "why are you playing guitar it'll ruin your nail polish" or "hot chicks playing guitars is hot".
Now if she persists through the initial volley of discouraging smack talk and get into a band most guys will look at it and go "oh it's just a gimmick, they only have a female player because she's hot". And many many other humiliating assumptions not based in her ability to actually play the instrument.
So yeah, can't blame most women for not wanting to voluntarily go through something like that.

It's improved in recent years, but just take a look at youtube comments for any female guitar player and you'll see it still mostly sucks.

That said there are many good, accomplished female players out there who are great musicians.
