Self-titled is yet another example of The Cure's B-sides often being better and better than their album material the further they get into their career. Why Can't I Be Me should have been on that thing.
I don't think I've listened to 4:13 since it came out. Botched effort. |

yeah it's hard to argue that some of the b-sides/outtakes from that album were among the best of the era, i haven't even heard some of the ones Shad is talking about but the Japanese edition really souped that baby up with tunes like this

The Tear Garden - Crystal Mass
ye Teargarden was also the name of gothic messiah Edward Ka-Spel's side project I didn't know that until now, and it's very good music equal parts dance all night and mysterious horror |

nivhek aka grouper aka liz harris
after its own death / walking in a spiral towards the house i can admit to being a tad peeved and somewhat amused to discover that three of the four lengthy tracks on this album amount to what sounds like xylophone improv night at Dave's House of Reverb. but then i do appreciate its artfulness, it's lack of structure and convention, it's unexpectedness. it's a beautiful mood piece that invites and invokes ever-deepening reflection as the album progresses — that is, if one approaches in a frame of mind prepared to take that sort of journey. it can turn a commute, for example, into a koyaanisqatsi-esque experience, wherein watching the newly green hills, the freeway traffic, the hovering fog, the stroboscopic passing of concrete pillars — all from the window of a train shooting straight through the middle of it all — becomes an experience draped in woozy existential strangeness and curiosity. but i'd guess it would also pair nicely with just about any prolonged episode of quiet observation. i've found myself wanting to be drawn down repeatedly into the world this piece offers. it's pretty and dark there, without feeling oppressive or threatening. i wouldn't blame anyone for feeling that an hours' worth of echo-y vibraphone is as presumptuous as this review. but regardless, it makes for an enchanting experience if you let it. . sounds more like a response to Whitney Houston than to Depeche Mode's Violator, but it's got some "bops" on it nevertheless

yeah it's been a while, normally if i'm ever in that JD mood i'll go for UP or Substance, but after reading Bernie's (Sumner, not Sanders ) book i wanted to throw it on again. strangely ligher & darker than UP at the same time, which I guess makes sense considering the direction New Order went vs. Ian
with this level of bleakness he would have needed some serious help after this album if things were ever going to go any differently, there's no way a US tour would have helped his condition. that being said i'm in the awkward position of being a huge N.O. fan and wishing, if he had saved his own life, that he'd still kinda step aside after this record and let the ORDA happen anyway a very inverse situation to Nirvana, basically |
