i always loved this Brian De Palma story re: Raging Bull

Quote:
during the shooting of ‘Scarface,’ ‘Raging Bull’ comes out. And so De Palma goes and sees ‘Raging Bull’ at the theater, and it just starts off with that opening credits shot. That classical music playing and the big, wide shot of the ring and Jake Lamada there just bouncing in slow motion in his robe. And he said, ‘No matter what you do, no matter how good you are, there’s always Scorsese. There’s always Scorsese challenging you right there.’ And that was Scorsese at this time.”
Scorsese in his prime really is as good as it gets.

That is literally true. Even better than any European filmmaker

Thor: Planet Ragna-Led Zeppelin

Immensely entertaining (this is the funniest Marvel movie ever, by a wide margin) but it felt like two movie ideas haphazardly mashed together, and one "movie" (the Planet Hulk "movie") was clearly better developed than the other. Not so much a film with a cohesive story as it was a grab bag of entertaining set pieces barely held together by a blink-and-you'll-miss-it plotline about the destruction of Asgard.

Maybe I'm too cynical, I don't know. Don't get me wrong, I was laughing my arse off throughout this movie, and I'm glad that Marvel isn't making these movies all doomy and gloomy. I just would like some story in my movie once in awhile.

Tom Hiddleston, whose Loki was once the most threatening villain in the MCU, has now been reduced to a punchline. Karl Urban and (unfortunately) Idris Elba are just kinda there, and Jeff Goldblum is at his most reliably Jeff Goldblum-y (for better or for worse) as the Grandmaster. As for Cate Blanchett's Hela, she seemed more than a little under-utilized and under-developed. The movie hypes her up as a long-lost ultimate badass but her character in the end never truly gets to shine as much as she could have, and that is a disappointment (her performance is fun and surprisingly sexy).

But let's face it, the film is undeniably a blast, it's pretty, the effects and action are cool, it's got Chris Hemsworth shirtless for the ladies and of course Hulk Smash. See this bullshit...and forget about it a week later.

B-

The Hobbit (1977) B+

Somewhat corny and some parts don't make much sense but it still works and is infinitely better than peter jackson's (may his beard wither) abomination. The songs are cute and Bilbo's a charmer. I am pleased. Think I shall check out the lotr ones.

Yes I read the books as an avid 12-16 year old reader

If the books deserve 10/10, for me the movies are a solid 8/10

Ok at least we agree on that.

The Hobbit is a great book. 9/10.

LOTR is convoluted and forced 7/10.

The SILMARILLION is a motherfucking masterpiece.

All the movies blow.

Ursula Le Guin once said that there were only three authors she read over and over again. Tolstoy Dickens and TOLKIEN.

Ursula is badass

I'd rather watch an instructional on how to perform an abortion with household cutlery than see Lord of the Rings again.

Sorry, Elijah, if you're still visiting that old lurker account of yours.

Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy was a flawed masterpiece of moviemaking.

Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy was a nine-hour-long PlayStation game posing as a movie.

The Frosty the Snowman version was super-corny but it definitely had a charm. The scene with Gollum, the scene where Bilbo looks out over the canopy of Mirkwood, and the Smaug scene were all great. I also liked when Bilbo tore Thorin a new one when he accused Bilbo of being a coward near the end of the movie.

That might actually be a useful skill to have in an emergency

Happy Hunting - 5/10. One of those late night movies you catch on IFC or something when you have nothing better to do.

The Royal Tenenbaums

Nice movie and all, but it's not really my style. It's so quaint and there's always a predictable element of perfectionism in how each shot is framed.

Does Wes have OCD or something?
