I wanna watch it! No easy way to do it from brazil tho

And yeah, MJ should've been cancelled ages ago.
(still has some absolute bangers tho...)

I saw it and it made me cancel him a third time, because I believed all the allegations the first go around, and the second, etc. This particular documentary really highlighted some viciousness, however. Awful.

I think it's kind of silly to #cancel someone ten years after their death over allegations that everyone knew about two and a half decades ago. Like, you didn't make that decision about his art decades ago? Why not?

But yes, documentary is harrowing and essential viewing. It's sad that those kids (who are now grown men my own age) will probably have a shadow of doubt cast over their stories even after all of this current buzz dies down.

Idk, different levels of awareness? People thinking it was all just rumors and speculation? There are many reasons one might've not processed this still.

I get that the culture has shifted, but I think the time to believe victims would've been more helpful nearly three decades ago.

It's not a personal criticism, just more a comment on the trendiness and ignorance of a very fickle and forgetful culture.

Like, did people really not know or did they just put it all off to the side because they loved his music and Twitter wasn't a thing yet? I dunno.

Yes, and the other accusations? All the stuff we *already* knew?

We're #Cancelling him ten years after his death based on *these* accusations when maybe we should've #Cancelled him 25 years ago, based on what was already pretty common knowledge. But then again, believing victims and/or #Canceling people who may or may not have done bad shit wasn't cool then.

Again, this is less a personal lashing out and just more of a grumbling with Twitter and hash tag activism and all of this crap. People only seem to care when it's the cool thing to do.

Maybe it's easier for me because even as a kid, I found his music to be hollow and trite.

So no one should say anything now because people didn't do anything before?
What is this logic? What is the point you're trying to make?

So you guys think criticism and holding people accountable is only valid if there's purity of intention and is done in a well defined time frame, and who gets to pick what is the right time and reason to say anything? you?

I think it's about spreading awareness and letting people make up their own damn minds if they are ok with his music or not with that additional information, as with everything.

To be fair to the hashtag people, they probably weren't yet literate and/or alive when more or less anybody from casual fan downwards regarded the guy as a raging pedo.

It was really only when he died that the "Wacko Jacko" thing gave way to the sort of cultural taxidermy his beneficiaries have been collecting on ever since and desperately want to preserve for the good of their bank balances.

nah not at all, I'm just allergic to the terminology, to be precise the term cancelled. I completely agree on a substantial level, wasn't even talking about it. Nevermind.

that and like it or not, this is how the majority of people express themselves nowadays (said from someone with no social media except old people FB), so i'm (kinda?) happy to see that the #hashtagging is generally used for what i perceive to be positive movements. but then again if i watch news at all, it's just the "fake news" so idk

I used the term canceled ironically (or whatever?) because I also hate it. Didn’t intend for that to be the focus of the thread lol

And that’s the tea sis
