Underrated considering they have a shit ton of legendary hits. Way more than a far superior band like Boston.

A lot of punk sucks ass too.

I mean take the Sex Pistols- (perhaps the most notorious punk band of all time) they're pretty much garbage and don't stand the test of time at all.

if any genre of music dodges sounding dated it's punk that's the beauty of bare bones production

fuzzy put on your thinking cap

if foreigner has a "shit ton of legendary hits. Way more than a far superior band like Boston,"

I am pretty sure that is called overrated

Nope.

Bostons pretty much my favorite arena rock band and Aerosmith is a lot more legendary than they are.

I don't think there's any other rock band with as many memorable hits that dominate classic rock radio yet are regulated to playing state fairs while only being considered a minor foot-note in the history of rock fans today than Foreigner.

If you can name some I'd love to hear em.

so let's try this again. Boston is a better band. Yet Foreigner has more hits, which means they had more songs people went out and bought and got played on the radio. Even though Boston is a better band, Foreigner was more popular. This does not make foreigner underrated

they are considered a footnote by modern audiences because they suck and their music made no impact. the people who still want to hear foreigner are almost certainly 95% the people who thought they were good in the 70s.

which is also the same people who are still listening to classic rock radio. old and non-serious music listeners

Blue Oyster Cult is underrated. They only had a handful of songs which made a mark on the charts. Though at their height they played arenas, they now play state fairs and small theaters to a small group of hardcore fans (compare to the Pumpkins' career arc maybe). Their early music is very interesting and substantially influenced a generation of artists, especially guitarists. Despite their uniqueness and their talent, they are hardly remembered in the mainstream for anything beyond more cowbell. Blue Oyster Cult is underrated.

Foreigner being reduced to state fairs just means that they are now playing where they have always belonged after being vastly overrated by stupid people in the 70s

You can't be that dense can you?

I'm simply talking about where they stand today among all the other 70's arena bands.

I agree with what you're saying here. Whether they have much artistic merit is either here nor there though. The fact is they still have some of the most played/beloved songs of any band of that era, so you'd figure that the no-minds who still pack arenas full to see Journey would at least still provide the group with enough fandom to keep em more relevant than they are.

Burning For You and Reaper are to BOC what Teen Spirit is to Nirvana or BWBW is to SP. They have so many great songs, they don't deserve to be reduced to that. this song is about a biker gang who, knowing their time has passed them by, blindly pull team colors out of a bag and then have a war to destroy themselves in the desert. I'm sorry, that's just fucking badass.

then the wind whipped the desert like a giant hand
and the humans and the Harleys caught the shifting sand
the old ranger weathered the storm
and he topped the rise by the middle of morn
he saw rippled dunes calm and surreal
and the glimpse of a solitary shaft of chromium steel

I'm not following the logic that foreigner is not underrated but blue oyster cult somehow is just because you like them more

I don't think so

something probably has to not be an incredibly popular rock band everyone knows about to be underrated idk

like Blue Oyster can't sell out shows not because people don't know they exist, but because nobody wants to go see them anymore lol

these were pop acts super popular in their time completely dated outside of it

To be fair, Blue Oyster Cult did seem to be more concerned about putting out an artistic statement whereas Foreigner was just about trying to write the most infectious memorable rock hooks. But it's fucking all arena rock music, so who really cares in the end?

I forgot to mention Bad Company. There's another legendary arena rock band who is seemingly forgotten in the ether of rock and roll importance.

SP has a bunch of post punk influences too

They sound like Bowie and The Cure meets Sabbath

or something

I really liken them to 2nd half of The Cure when they moved from minimalist wire-esque post punk to big lush guitar playing

that's true but listening to that song I posted, I can't not hear how music like this heavily shaped SP. The non-traditional structure, the huge guitar riffs, the self-indulgence and swagger of the music. Bloated arena rock is like a third of their sound.
