Holy god DISARM can i talk to you about it in here, together?

For years n years ive skipped disarm. Knew of it back and front, Em Cthing, G, D etc, killern me. Been there. Boring of it

BUT THEN

In plainsong we get the weird organ, and there’s just solo bill with his back to us, in the dark, and i started to feel thekillern me/you, my love again

Then this year he does it out there with those pics of lil bill and omfg he GOT me: im sobbing lustily, in the theater, in front of everyone

One of their truly finest songs. I've had several different women completely fall in love with it after hearing me play it while the rest of SP does nothing for them.

Don't laugh, Disarm being played by a boy on guitar was not only the first SP song I ever heard in any form, but also made my crush on that boy even bigger. It happens.

Without that Disarm performance I might not have switched instruments to guitar, might not have gotten into SP at all [and would have also prevented myself from falling for this boy for god damn 5 lousy years!]

forgive me. clearly the path that led to greatness and mod-status began with a boy playing guitar on disarm. truly i am a fool to have laughed at such a spiritual experience!

lol I should be clear when I say "heard me play it" I mean simply having the C.D. on, not actually performing it myself lol

really amazing, underapprecited song.

and really it's just satisfying for the soul that at least one person got to take back their humanity from their abusers in song form in front of the entire world

That’s really it, for me

That pain is true and raw and naked, when you give in to what the lyrics are actually communicating, it’s flat out overhwleming

And then here’s this friekin HIT SINGLE of a songtune as a vehicle for it, what an achievement

Disarm is not only one of Billy’s best songs, it’s one of the definitive alternative rock songs of the 90’s. It’s one of those songs that will be listed in a “1990’s late period alternative rock” chapter in a textbook about 20th century western popular music one day. The pain Billy expresses is so raw and real which makes it that much more of an achievement. As much I hate on Billy here, I have to say honestly he shows incredible resilience and courage in turning his pain into art in “Disarm.”

I will say this though....both Butch Vig and the rest of the band deserve some measure of credit for this song. Even if it’s not clear what their compositional or performance contributions might be, the influence of those four really brought the best out of Billy. On Siamese Dream his weirdness and grandiosity was very clearly being reeled in by certain countervailing influences.

That’s just my opinion though.

nah dawg disarm is legit a great piece of art. i'd say disarm and tonight tonight are the real songwriting gems (as far as singles) billy wrote. 1979 may be the most popular or whatever, but the arrangements, songcraft, lyrics, and emotional singing make disarm and tonight tonight miles above the other singles.
