Default What was Billy thinking with the Monuments lineup?

Stoermer was fine but he had no stage presence at all, but goddamn Brad Wilk was horrifically out of place. Get a guy with one rack tom who’s known for playing lumbering kick snare beats to replace Jimmy, ok.

Tonight Tonight and United States are particularly awful here

Yea, Wilk was really bad. I didn't think it could get any worse than Mike. Wilk just didn't have that Pumpkins groove at all.

The version of Ava Adore is atrocious. He plays like someone who has arm paralysis and that fucking ride cymbal, woof

easily the most depressing, lifeless era of the "band"

I used to not fuss too much about what does and doesn't count as "The real Smashing Pumpkins," because at the end of the day, it's just a name whose referent is purely dictated by convention, and there's no true "essence" of the term."

But now that we have most of the original band back, it feels absurd that the lineup that only had Corgan and some folks half his age were ever considered "The Smashing Pumpkins." And even weirder when Corgan ditched even those kids to put out an album with Tommy Lee as a session musician, and still insisted on using the name.

It was the "If it's me and yer granny on drums then it's SP" era. This lineup was probably never intended to last. WPC wanted to tour and these were the guys available and willing at the time.

Wilk is a good/great choice, on paper. Never saw the lineup but from that video he sounds like a guy who knows he's only there temporarily.

You can't possibly think these drums sound good. Mike Burns did a better job.

Wilk is a great drummer. I do not think anyone here seriously disputes that. People take issue with the fact that his style does not fit the Smashing Pumpkins sound, and he was obviously chosen more for name recognition than the ability to fit the band.

tbh this was kind of a fun time just because of the sheer unpredictability of everything going on in the "SP camp" by this point. Teargarden era was more depressing because it just seemed like the end of the line

I remember being stoked on the idea of these additions: two big names. But as has been discussed heartily here, it just didn't work.

As far as Stoermer goes, you don't get that dude for his stage presence. You're not gonna get it. But as far as bass goes, he's way up there in my book. Bass is a huge part of what makes The Killers awesome. And he's a big SP fan, so you could tell he was stoked to be up there: relatively speaking, of course. Dude has a very flat affect.

The name must have played a role in the decision, but I also think that Billy was looking for someone whose style fits the Monuments album, and I think Wilk's does. It's just that it doesn't gel at all with the rest of the catalogue.

my personal favorite sp2 lineup was the post-Oceania, pre-Monuments group where he was literally just playing with 311

those were the days!

Yet another joke.

What is this, an insufferable self-schwanzi milking thread?
