I still don't properly understand the distinction between powerviolence and grindcore. I thought NAILS was Grindcore but apparently they're powerviolence. And then I though Rotten Sound was death metal but apparently that's Grindcore. #grindcoreproblems

Nails is grind

I mean the term powerviolence was created for or by Man is the Bastard, that's what it sounds like

I pretty much just call everything heavy "metal" now though

I gotta say this thread is going better than I anticipated. Don't know why I wasn't expecting SP fans to love emo.

I'm a fucking huge nerd for Circle Takes The Square. Didn't like the new album but i've got every note of As The Roots Undo burned into my memory. The back end of "Kill The Switch" is brilliant.

Another contemporary emo band I really love that i'm sure most people definitely hate with a passion is La Dispute:

soooooo earnest but I <3 it.

I have no idea why people think it's important to label bands so specifically. I mean, Pedro the Lion is fucking amazing and that's all. I think that some 95% of what I listen to would be considered emo - some the good kind, some the bad kind?

I am kinda conflicted with how much I like PBTT's Keep You, because I was 100% not into them prior to that record, yet I love every song in that.

I can see how someone how didn't like The Lack Long After could get into Keep you, the style is radically different. I love both old and new PBTT though.

I listened to the Jawbreaker album Dear You and, I dunno, there was a lot of good stuff going on there, but also a lot of cringey stuff mixed with it that makes it overall hard to enjoy the album. Though I hear that was there "they sold out, maaan!" album, so maybe I should try their earlier stuff.

Cursive is one of my all-time favorite bands. I suppose I've heard them called "emo" before.

What's the relation between emo and slowcore? I hear similarities, but I never really hear them discussed in the same context. Is slowcore just considered it's own animal because it didn't evolve out of hardcore punk? I dunno, I like The Arab Strap tho.

I dunno if they're just kinda connected by having a similar audience.

I've heard from some podcasts that Blake Midgett (Pg 99) is now a shitty bartender in NY addicted to cocaine and young Asian girlfriends.
