Default Weird Al Appreciation Thread

Aside from my dad playing me the Foo Fighters debut album when I was 5, Mr Yankovic was my favorite artist from about 10-13 or so

Me and my friend used to recite the lyrics to Amish Paradise and shit on the school bus. Good times

my bud kevin got me hooked on al in the fifth grade. It was all I listened to for several years. I had like 13 of his albums or something. we even went to his show in baltimore which was my first concert. my dad took us and then embarrassed me by urinating in an alley because he couldn't hold it on the way back to the car.

When Poodle Hat came out I kind of realized how stupid it was and I moved onto Aerosmith and Offspring.

same same. I had all his first 12 albums on CD and he was my first concert, indianapolis, 7/3/2007. I remember getting my first iPod and Straight Outta Lynwood on the same day and it was like the best day of my life at the time

I hesitate to say that it was stupid, though it was kinda stupid. Too many good memories to dismiss like that I guess

Moved on to Nirvana after

I just bought In-3D on vinyl a couple weeks back and found a bunch of early demos on YouTube I had never heard before. Weird Al rules.

Don't shame him. Weird Al is timeless. I bought "Even Worse" in the mid-90s (my first weird al album) and had to ask my mom what it was.

IN 3D > Dare to be Stupid > S/T > Even Worse

I wasn't trying to shame him, just being silly

I liked Al's 90s albums better than his 80s albums. Bad Hair Day and Running With Scissors are the best

i always had a thing for alapalooza but that was like one of the first cassettes i owned. i later subscribed to BMG to get all his CDs as my free picks, but i gave them all away, sadly.

I would argue that In-3D is his best.

Here's some college demo recordings

as a long time fan, discovering this threw me off my chair. the version of shattered/fatter at the end cracks me up so hard. @ 2:25

Bad Hair Day > Running with Scissors > Dare to Be Stupid > Alapalooza > In 3D > Poodle Hat > Off the Deep End > UHF > s/t > Even Worse > Polka Party

I never listened to Lynwood or the next one, but I did watch most of the videos for the newest one and I was surprised at how clever they seemed. In general I think his humor got smarter and sharper and more biting as his career went on. Dare to Be Stupid is pretty good not gonna lie, but his earlier stuff tends to be more silly

hahaha that's great

he is (or at least was, I dunno now) a truly great entertainer and performer live. Costume and set changes for EVERY song? That's pretty intense. Who else in music can say they performed as santa, fat michael jackson, a jedi, and an amish dude in the span of 20 minutes?

my next concert was aerosmith with my dad, and that was pretty disappointing in contrast. other than the experience of seeing marijuana being smoked for the first time and some old women flash their fake tits at joe perry, I just got a bunch of lazy old washed up has-beens who played for 45 minutes and walked off stage with no encore. oh and the opener was andrew wk

Thinking back, after a while, I didn't even really laugh at the songs as a kid, I just listened out of laziness(?) instead of going and seeking out other serious artists.

But listening back now they're hilarious

the comedy of the lyrics is what made it palatable to me. I did not "get" serious music at all, like I had nothing to relate to it as a 10-year-old. But everyone can relate to songs about tv and food. Before Weird Al my tastes were like the Lion King soundtrack and a few pop albums from the 90s.

There are a lot of jokes I didn't get as a kid which I understand now though, which is funny. Now listening to Dare to Be Stupid

i was listening to SP at 10 years old and Weird Al seemed very silly. probably not so healthy to be that serious at that age

it's funny becoming older and suddenly getting the jokes that were over my head as a kid. I had only a vague idea who the Police were and had never heard that song in 5th grade. tbh I'm pretty sure I thought the joke was about an indian guy running a shop or something

fucking hilarious when I came back to the song years later and realized he is ragging on Sting's fake-ass offensive Jamaican accent
