Several of the successive lines in this song form their own couplets depending on how you read it actually:

Blank page was all the rage, never meant to say anything.

Was all the rage never meant to say anything

Never meant to say anything in bed

In bed I was half dead

I was half dead dreaming of rest

My guess is this is purposeful to highlight the sort of rambling, confessional nature of the song. I'm pretty sure he said most of this came out in one sitting. If you interpret the lyrics in this sort of rambling associative way, it also fits the tone of the progression of music. Aren't there 44 chords in this song before the progression repeats from the beginning?

You mean Billy starts the song singing it's title, which is not part of the lyrics? Do you really believe that?

Oh, you mean, you ignore context and intonation, dislike the use of a comma but think it's fine to add a question mark to the verse.

Ok, cool.

How's the lyrical breakdown coming along?

Everyday I wake up thinking, "Maybe today will be the day...Jelly won't let me down this time, I just know it..." and every night I fall asleep in tears, my only companion, thinking, "Why, Jelly... why??"

jelly blossom just texted and asked me to relay the message that he is currently at the library doing research. unfortunately it seems someone has checked out the book he needs to complete his analysis, and as such expects a delay of approximately two weeks.

he thanks you for your enthusiasm and patience during this sensitive time, and asks that his wishes for privacy be honored.

IIRC in his confessions, b0lly said the original working title was "44" or "44 chords"

this thread has been an interesting read, but i think many of you take the lyrics too literally by trying to decipher them word for word.

billy is a "colorless green ideas sleep furiously" kinda lyricist. he's very good at stringing together words that have some kind of play, rhythm, imagery or emotional effect, without necessarily saying anything concrete at least half of the time (if not more).

that's not to say i think blank page is meaningless - just that it's kind of like an impressionist painting. you're not meant to scrutinize it. it throws out images and says things in a confused manner, kind of creating the effect of a lonely person driving around at night having uncontrollable strings of thought about his broken relationship.

just by using words and phrases with such emotional weight in succession, such as 'blank', 'rage', 'never meant to say anything', it creates a more complete sketch of a crumbling relationship than if you were to try and describe it in detail. man the pumpkins used to be really great huh.

the story was the he woke up one morning before going to the studio, immediately reeled off that poem, shoved it in his pocket thinking he might use some of it later, and went out.

in the studio, upon hearing the backing track (that was originally supposed to be a cinematic instrumental with strings) he started humming those words and the song rushed over him all at once.

then they recorded it, and brad wood was fired.

Brad Wood got fired after recording "To Sheila," if I remember correctly. I hate to be "that guy," but I just remember because it's a funny story. According to what he wrote in the Confessions, Billy was pouring his heart our and playing the song on guitar, and really digging the vibe. When he asked Brad Wood what he thought of the song, and if he had any input, Wood came over the speaker and said something along the lines of "that was cool." Apparently, Bjorn later told Billy that Brad Wood had not even been paying attention while Billy was playing the song, and instead was bragging to engineers about how much free gear he got from saying he was producing the new Smashing Pumpkins record.

I do not know why, but that story ranks up there with the Kim Thayil "you hurt my heart" story and the recent Billy/Bradford Cox story. I just love the idea that Billy, who was used to guys like Bitch Vig and Flood telling him all his ideas were great and working directly with Billy, freaking out when some indie/hipster producer could not have given a shit less about what, to Billy's credit, remains one of his best studio performances.
