Default Sequel to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Machina (33-song album)

Billy: "We're currently working on a 33-song album which is actually a sequel to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Machina."

* He will change directions midway through
* "We've decided to release it incrementally as 33 singles"
* "We've decided to release it as 3 songs over 11 EPs"
* It's now a prequel to CYR
* It's 5 songs long

Bold - yet also not at all - prediction here. Glad this is immortalized in the annals of Netphoria for the coming months, years.

I just have so, so many questions about this... and even more concerns.

The one that won't happen is Shiny 3 - I think he might know it's a commercial dead end. Which is a shame as in my mind Shiny 3 is this cool shoegaze guitar album with long songs and breathy MBV vocals.

Really, it won't be long before he makes SD2.

Still holding on to that Bellee Crogan from '95 i see.

WPC is not into guitars. Unless they come with a price tag and his name on the back of the headstock.

Can’t wait to hear what Willy thinks a sequel to MCIS sounds like in ‘21.

My guess... the same as everything else he puts out: 4 minute songs, a lorra lorra synths, some VERY 2021 VOCALS and no jungle drumming. The lead single will be inspired by Post Malone / The Weekend and Billy will name drop them in promo material for clicks. The record will bear no relation to those acts, Machina or MCIS. It will be the “wrasslin-debt-paid-thankyou-breakup” record.

It will sound like buttered ass.

But I’m hopeful.

I want to hear half a dozen James Iha led tracks on this record. I want a handful of 8-min JCC-led tracks on this record. Otherwise it’s a failure from the get-go.

Nope.

I predict they're going to go all out on this one. They know this is a big, important album that's going to define their legacy. WPCs gonna bring his A+ game. It's going to be really, really good and ambitious and the drums are cool and the there's solos and oh geez Billy why is your voice so loud and why are you singing like that

Billy has been saying for years he can still write songs like he did in the golden era, now I guess we'll see if that's remotely true.

If past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour, we're likely to get stuff like GLOW and Folololol, no?

I sincerely hope they knock it out of the park again with this.

That hope might be pure folly, but, well, whatever.

I, perhaps stupidly, still think they have it them. Certainly Jimmy is still world class. So the hope is not entirely unfounded.

This round I'm genuinely cheering them on for a real comeback.

Post Mellon Collie 2

If they just use heavy distortion, play faster tempos, and tell Jimmy to bring it, I'll be happy at this stage. I don't expect there to be anything approaching peak-era singing or songwriting on this, but I'd love to be wrong.

If it gets good reviews / decent promotion - has a gem or two on it that hits the mainstream radio... it's possible. Right?

It's a big statement isn't it - to say that we are directly following up these records You immediately invite comparison to their best works. They will either fly or completely fall on this, right? It's a bold move. He / they must believe that they suppass that level of work - right? This is a going out in blaze of glory - rather than slowlhy fading away... As the old cliché goes, isn't it?

I mean, sequel to star wars gets more interest / views than - star wars universe film X . Right?

I know the quality thing isn't exactly the best comparison here - but I guess its principle of "brand power" . The end of the Skywalker saga is more or a thing than Rouge One or Lando or something - that doesn't mean stuff to most people. MCIS Its their main cultural currency right.

Sorry, should be clear, Im mostly rooting for a comeback of 'quality'. I don't care that much if it's culturally pop or what not. And i don't think his voice is suddenly going to sound like his old voice. And I'm worried he'll be overly wordy still. But I hope quality of songs, part and production - will make these things just minor niggles. Anyway. There we go..

According to Jeff, himself and James are in LA at the minute, which means Billy and Jimmy are the only ones currently recording the album.

WPC does not believe there’s a “classic sp sound”. There is one indeed but the fucker can’t be bothered. The whole sequel to the saga will probably amount to a patchwork story nobody gives a shit about.

Absolutely no way Flood will produce either - would be appropriate if it were a proper sequel and prob the best early news that could come out of this project
