Can't wait to hear the material most reviews have cited as the worst half of the record.

Yeah, it is indeed out there. I am skipping the released tracks and already 2/3rds through it. Stand outs are literally only Cyr (who would have thought?) and Wyttch. What is so absurd for these millionaires with their private studios is how they're literally using the stock Roland TD-50 drum sounds.

Starrcraft is good, but the electronic part is a bit too much

my only hope is that jimmy used shitty stock roland sounds to match corgan's shitty synths

he's a great musician who plays to the song at all costs

I don't care what you guys will say, I like the album. I really respect Billy for still trying to make something out of his comfort zone, like Tyger Tyger.

I'm not sure how good it would be a SD 2 album, but I'm sure he could still emulate that sound/production nowadays. It would probably be only a pale copy, in my opinion, but to the casual listener it would sound like "the old pumpkins".

A few songs here are forgettable (Haunted, The Hidden Sun, Minerva), the album would probably be easier to listen if shorter.

Starrcraft and Telegenix were pretty much the only ones I liked from the unreleased batch. Haunted and Schaudenfreud are okay. Tyger, Tyger isnít as bad as I thought it would be but the synths are shit on that one and Katie Coleís vocals are the only thing I like about the song. Minerva is catchy but it sounds so cheesy for a closer, expected some kind of dark synth epic, at the very least.

Save Your Tears is probably the only standout track on this album that isn't impossible to listen to

Not as terrible as I'd imagined it'd be. Some nice chord changes and some of the drums/programming are cool.

No compulsion to listen again though and when I'd finished with the 10 I'd not heard and COL came on (player on repeat), I couldn't unplug my headphones quick enough. So, I'm guessing if all 20 were fresh, I wouldn't have made it through.

Summary: bland with a few decent moments. 4/10.

Checking out the second half of the album right now. Starrcraft may be one of the worst songs on the album.

Some standout lyrics that are "I will be Special K" and "I'm gonna love you 101%" level:

That handclap on EVERY SINGLE BEAT is incredibly obnoxious as is "I'll rock your mind"

Ok I'm out, I can't finish this. The second half is a total chore to sit through. It's like a sandwich you got at a restaurant that is way too big and you can only eat half. You've asked for a takeout box, but we all knows it's going to rot in the fridge at home till you throw it out.

Of course, from the period Smashings Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness, only drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and guitarist James Iha remain, bassist D'arcy Wretzky still not reconciled with tyrannical Corgan.

And a priori never will be. If Rick Rubinís recomposition album rekindles their alternate golden age, Cyr is shifting into much fresher pop, for one simple reason.

"I couldn't take any more people telling me that my music doesn't sound contemporary," said the boss.

In this twenty-track double album, Corgan has thus placed the accent on synths and female choirs. Right from the start, we think of the Canadian group TR / ST (Sulk) with that kick-hammered dark pop.

The formula is repeated enough, which could be one more, to differ on Wyttch and his heavy guitars, the organ of Save Your Tears or the chiaroscuro of Purple Blood.

This singular double, the opposite of the best-selling '90s one, proves - if he still does - that Billy Corgan is never as good as around the Smashings. © Charlotte Saintoin / Qobuz
