ok:
my textbook for a class I'm taking has me doing some really basic base 10 -> binary conversions and vice versa. For example, I'm supposed to convert the number "5" to binary. I get "101"
Code:
1x2^2 + 0x2^1 + 1x2^0
for my answer. The book says that my answer should be 0101. This doesn't make any sense to me and I am wondering if I'm wrong or if the book is just weird.

the leading zeros would only be nessesary to keep you on track if you were adding two binary numbers so you don't loose place.

like 3 + 5

3 = 11
5 = 101

3 + 5 =
Code:
   011
+  101
------
 10000
without the leading zero you might get confused is all.

000000101 is the same as 101
someone will correct me if i remember incorrectly here

yeah, you don't need the leading zeros.

but i think the result of your sum is 1000 (8), instead of 10000 (16).

i'm an eye doctor. i know about 1's and 2's, not 0's and 1's.

i did actually need to use something both binary and hexidecimal related at one point like 3 years ago.

my job does not, however, classify as cool

you know if you count on your hands in binary it's possible with just 10 fingers to represent any decimal number from 0 to 1023. not that it's practical or anything

My friend knows how to do that.

We deduced that four is an offensive number, seventeen is a cool number, and eighteen and nineteen are rockin' mumbers.

that is, if you count as one being your thumb.
