While all of those bands have quite a bit of merit it is painfully obvious you've listened fuck all by The Fall and have automatically declared them as inferior simply because you aren't familiar with them

Like really Echo and the Bunnymen is as far as you got

Develop some tastes

The last unique movement of Rock music in the UK is apparently inferior to classic Rock revival acts

Britpop is the British equivalent of Grunge it wasn't something new it was a new way to sell you something old

I'd also consider early U2 and Wire to be better than the Fall. And I consider early U2 to be as good as Echo and the bunnymen.

Britpop was something new at times. It wasn't always classic rock revival stuff. Doves and Elbow and even early Coldplay and the Verve and Suede and a few others were trying something new. You might have a point with blur and oasis and elastica but not all britpop bands were just recycling old stuff

The literal most boring band to ever be considered post punk

early U2 were nothing like the easy listening / pop rock stuff from Unforgettable Fire onward. They were an interesting group before that on their first three records. I don't think anyone who is a true fan of post punk would think that early U2 were boring. Preachy and heavy handed maybe but not boring.

The second wave of Britpop that started in the 2000s was a lot more interesting than the first wave of Britpop from the 90s. Doves and Elbow and yes even Coldplay made some interesting music early on. They didn't wear their influences on their sleeves as much as 90s Britpop bands like Blur and Oasis.

As much as I like the Verve I'll even ******* them in that too. They owe a lot to classic rock. You just didn't see that classic rock influence in the newer more recent Britpop bands. They owed more to Radiohead but it was never blatant rip off. It was more subtle and in general more unique.

Not really familiar with The Fall, but I listened to the songs posted here and I like it when they sound sort of like a Yo La Tengo precursor.

its not that these bands are inherently awful they are all fairly inoffensive just boring as all hell versions of bands that already existed

This is the type of music I'd expect someone who says they've grown up to listening to Drake would hold in high esteem

Cold Play, Adult contemporary, everything must be as light an easy as possible

Nothing offensive, nothing thought provoking

You can maybe make that claim about SOME of Coldplay's work being versions of bands that already existed. But not even all of their early work sounds like Radiohead or U2. They had their own style at times. You can totally say that about Snow Patrol and you'd be right. But really Doves and Elbow didn't sound like anyone when they came out.

You're a hipster and an elitist / snob who writes off entire genres of music. Arguing with you is like arguing with a child. You're not a mature open minded musicologist. You're just a childish snob when it comes down to it. I can see why certain people like sonic Johnny got sick of you.

Srsly, why dont u both define what you mean by "post punk" for us

It occurs to me it'd be more fun to learn this from two dudes who clearly care about it and vehemently disagree about it than try to teach myself about it

Let's start with post punk haircuts. Help me out, I know nothing. You have the power to save this thread with some good haircut pics

My Great Clips lady, for example, today gave me a #3 on the side but left my combover fringe all long and I can form with it a thin, limpid spike centered in my forehead, but otherwise do nothing else with it. I need to know, quick, if it can pass as post punk or if I need to go back to get the top trimmed down

But SJ and I were on great terms when he left....
He never got "sick of me"

What are you even talking about

I'm not open minded because I don't prefer U2. Really now.

I don't prefer the most entry level artists because I've moved past them.

You are the one dismissing groups you obviously haven't listened to because they are "hipster" you fuzzyroes

There isn't a disagreement here about what constitutes post punk

CW comes into a thread about The Fall and makes the claim that stuff he likes is better than something he's never listened to because "hipsters"

This whole thread is just hipsters patting each other on the back for liking a band that most people don't even fucking know about or care about. I think this entire board is kind of a safe haven for hipsters who in real life can't relate to the average person's taste in music.
