The first one is, indeed, Cate Le Bon's Pompeii. It's incredible.

I really really like the new AnCo album for its mix of experimental and yet catchy songs...the new Cate Le Bon and APTBS is on my To-Listen list, good to know they're good, I just heard APTBS last song on the album recently, quite nice. Wasn't overall convinced on all the previous singles though, but I'll judge after a full listen

Yeah, the last few APTBS albums really didn't do it for me. Honestly, their first two records are really the ones I love. Exploding Head is a fucking ripper. See You Through is the most I've been excited by them in a long while. I'll still always see them live.

Same for me, their 2007 s/t debut and Exploding Head are my favs as well, Worship was the last album of them I really enjoyed all the way thru. I have seen them live 2x (2012 (quite short gig, I think 35 minutes!) and 2015) and it was quite intense volume-wise. In 2015 they played a 2nd set where Ackermann was just doing a chilled set directly in the crowd, doing electronic sound experiments, that was ace! I'm thinking about seeing them on tour in March. At US gigs they often throw their guitars around and totally smashing them, I have yet to witness that!

Ok, I really enjoyed the new Cate Le Bon, but I miss her weirdness in many tracks, though I can see how the album hits a nerve sound-wise in these days, production also is superb. The album sounds like a longing for the "better" 80s, but don't take that as an offense, her music is more intelligent than mainstream music from that era. She did some cool stuff with Bradford Cox some time ago

edit: it definitely sounds dreamy, which is awesome _

Tegan and Sara covered each other's songs on So Jealous, which is my favorite album of theirs. Really interesting, especially 18 years later! I always thought Sara's songs were more rock/spacey/dreamy in this album, and Tegan gave them some real grunge grit. And I found Tegan's songs to be really plastic and 2004 emo here, but with a few classic rock guitar elements sprinkled in some tracks. And Sara gave them a folky, layered ethereal makeover. So I listened to that today, hot off the press.

I've been following them off and on since This Business of Art and I've never had the slightest idea which one of them is singing, which one wrote it, whatever, and for some reason I just cannot fathom being able to do so

Like I genuinely did not know until right now that they wrote songs separately

Untroo fan, etc., but it's weird to think I could've joined Quinphoria decades ago instead of this cursed place and had just this completely different understanding of what I've been listening to all this time

Anyway, this and Laurel Hell for like the ninetieth time

Yeah, I love their music to the level I love the Pumpkins, and enjoy them as people far more. They are extremely distinct musically to me, and even in the early albums where they still sang with a lot more vocal grit/rasp, I can still tell them apart immediately. Tegan tends to have hookier riffs and Sara gets more experimental. They don't even write their songs in the same city as each other most of the time, and send each other demos before getting together to touch everything up. Sara actually sites Siamese Dream as her favorite album, and I think that's very obvious in many of her tracks. I Bet It Stung is probably a prime example of that, and even her recent pop foray had many echoing "wall of sound" elements.

I really enjoyed their book, and as a female, queer, white, suburban ex drug user, their high school years had a lot of similarity to mine....except mine had only about 25% of the friends and no musical talent or charm ever. They are fucking hilarious. I could do without their super pop albums, but it seems they have become reinterested in raw music again.

Interesting. I may look up which one wrote some of the stuff I like best and try to get a sense of this shit. I'm sure I can find this out at the same time, but I assume they tend to sing lead on their own stuff?

I had a very brief "I can't believe they sold out" phase where I was only dimly aware of their newer material, and then I heard the newer material and no longer gave a fuck; I actually like their "Heartthrob" album best I think

Anyway, today's albums so far

Really like the b-side or bonus track or whatever that Sara Quin co-wrote on this, "Sweetie"

I'll spare you the Googling, yes they sing lead on their own tracks. They actually often sing backup on their own tracks, too. But not always. The albums are pretty cohesive for what is basically 2 people writing songs independently and then putting them in an order. Must be a twin thing.

Heartthrob was pretty good, Love You To Death was very poppy too but interesting. Their album which remade all their high school demos was the one where I really felt the sting of pop music gloss, because I LOVED the old demos and all their grungy glory. But the cleaned up versions aren't bad.
