I dunno about Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear, but there was a fair amount of hype around the last Arcade Fire album two years ago

a lot of bands fade out, like the smashing pumpkins for example. affixing "indie culture" or "hipsters" to this kind of thing alone is

and tbh like slunken said that's ALL of culture, music art symphonies movies theatre poetry novels EVERYTHING

why u so mad at "indie"

Feels is a fucking great album. But it isn't typical of their sound.

Didn't get on with Sung Tsongs or whatever.
MPP had a couple of decent tracks such as Brother Sport, but was overrated.
Didn't bother with Centipede Hz as the lead single was pish.

Saw them play a festival during the Feels tour and they were awful. 45 minutes of self-indulgent noodling to an empty tent. Played like one song off that album. They're going to be remembered as culturally-significant or whatever because of the love-in at sites like Pitchfork and there's a generation of journalists that'll keep pushing them. But imo they're a really inconsistent, mostly shitty band.

because the "indie" culture in question was supposed to pride itself on being separated from the mainstream etc, but in the end, like both of you said, it all reacts to things the same way & is fickle to varying degrees so what's the PURNT

holla back!

Indie culture is a term made by people on the outside looking in.

There really is nothing like what you are describing.

I mean is pitchfork really any different then what Rolling Stone was in the 70's. It's just a few taste makers writing about people they know and what they like. Trying to say there was some cultural concentrated movement around this is dumb and only something people from the outside looking in ever say.

There are no people following sets of rules and all of this stuff is fluid. Are there meetings and guidelines handed out? Who prided themselves on it? Was there a caucus and a platform announced?

Bands if they are lucky might get 8 good years. Most bands get 4 or less.

There is not a secret society of people that get together and pretend to like bands just with the purpose of making you feel dumb when you don't get it

There are just people who like music other than Arena Rock and Metal

Thanks for enlightening me that there are people out there who like stuff besides arena rock and metal. As if I didn't know. You're how old, 20? I think I was going to that explosions in the sky gig when you were like 6 years old. Thanks.

as much as it pains me to agree with something rider said, he's right, indie as some kind of label is just another stupid marketing word applied from the outside like "alternative." then you get some people who take music more seriously than they should to believe they are part of some special scene or something.

sorry your special club didn't turn out the way you wanted

It's especially bad when it comes to hipster culture, it happens so much that it's become a joke to a lot of music fans. In the mainstream or rap, metal and punk you never get artists that are praised as being the best thing since sliced bread and then instantly fizzle out a couple years later... That kinda shit is specific to the hipster culture and the examples are endless. I can't stand that hipster shit so I don't know all of the examples, but a few that I haven't seen mentioned: Hot Hot Heat, Das Racist, Foster The People, Lorde, Peter Bjorn and John ETC.

That's what happens when you get a bunch of shallow music fans who praise style over substance though... No staying power

Well I guess it does happen in the mainstream too: one hit wonders and all of that, but as Mals pointed out: Indie (in the mind of its fans) is supposed to be above that.

nah it's just a runnathemill "artist" out there who you always seem to love. Don't get me wrong, I love how you like the obscured forgotten 90's shit... But you also loved that guy who had that "Take me to church" song. I literally can't even remember his name anymore.
