Which 90's bands had the best initial 3 year run?

It's always fun to debate which bands from the 90's are the best, and ultimately it always comes down to what kind of longevity they've had, how they've ended up evolving- but I wanna look at it in a vacuum so to speak... Perhaps every band went out like Nirvana did at their peak- Who would you say had the greatest initial run?

Heres my picks:

Weezer (94-96)

These guys were amazing in their initial run. The awesomeness of the Blue album to the growth and exciting departure of Pinkerton. These guys were firing on all cylinders- all of the b-sides from this era are fantastic too. I think back to 1999 just knowing Weezer by their released material and there was SO MUCH anticipation and excitement from the fanbase once they heard they'd be releasing a new album... Well... It was all downhill from there. An awesome band of the time though.

Green Day (94-96)

It was Green Day mania back in the day. Dookie hit like an atom bomb and they pretty much flipped the music landscaped on it's ass. People say Nu-Metal killed grunge, but I've always believed it was the rise of Green Day and to a lesser extent the Offspring. Dookie was just so fresh and exciting and Green Day brought a new energy to a stagnant music scene with their exciting live shows. And only 1 year later we got a major departure from Dookie with the fantastic album Insomniac. Green Day was on top of the world and really made a lot of great music in a short period of time.

Smashing Pumpkins (93-95)

Well we all know the story here.

Nirvana (91-93)

Death to hair-metal. Nirvana was the kick in the ass the music scene needed at the time, and Kurt brought a polished and rocking sound to a genre that was underground. Nevermind and In Utero remain pivotal albums of the day and still sound great and fresh more than 20 years later.

Theres many more picks, but these are the top few that spring to mind. What are your picks?

There was a ton of 90's bands who were great and fizzled out in an instant.

IMO zep takes this if you factor in their live sets. they were one of the best live bands ever before plant's voice died and jimmy got deep into heroin

Really wish I had the means to compare the two live. Sabbath were consistently a juggernaut all the way through but man some of those Zep shows on the ST DVD set... Kashmir is pure transcendence.

As a whole I think Zep experimented more and tried different stuff but... I really struggle to find any flaws in that period of Sabbath. Like I'll skip a few tunes on Zep I and Zep III but I can't find any song I don't like on those first five Sabbath albums.

Kashmir on that DVD is from the Earl's Court 75 gigs I think? plants voice is pretty blown at that point (but not as bad as 73), and jimmy is in good form on all those dates. the Knebworth 79 footage on the DVD is one of their best, especially the No Quarter.

Man I didnt realise you were such a head for Zep. Any good boots you can recommend? I spent my eleven years as a drummer worshipping daily at the altar of Bonzo so anything where he's particularly on point would be choice.

it's been a while since I dug into zep real hard, but a couple favorites off the top of my head. up to 71 almost every show is straight fire so it's more about what has good sound quality, they were such a loud band that average tape quality is lower than most of their contemporaries

6/25/72 los angeles -- portions of how the west was won are drawn from this
1/15/73 stoke -- bonzo fucking MURDERS misty mountain hop
3/21/75 seattle -- longest show of 75 tour, really good dazed
5/24/75 london
6/7/77 new york -- this is a pretty bad show and I can't find it on youtube, but bonham drops a fill during kashmir that's so gigantic (a full four bars, I think) that the rest of the band stops playing in disbelief
6/21/77 los angeles -- linked above, good bonzo show
8/4/79 knebworth
7/7/80 berlin -- worth it only for trampled underfoot and WLL, 80 shows suck in general

I honestly couldn't name a bad bonham performance, unlike plant and page he didn't let his substance use affect his playing except in very rare situations

The thread title and original post refer to this idea of the "initial" three-year run of each respective band, while the periods of creativity actually discussed manage to leave out earlier albums and many years of prior activity for three-quarters of them.

I am a little confused by this. Are we actually referring to the three-year period commencing with what might be regarded as a given band's breakthrough album?
