That's exactly what I was thinking a darker IR

Lyrically the album is very bleak and it ends with True Love Waits

pretty sure it all has to do with Yorke's separation from his wife

clearly I am outvoted but I definitely do not hear this as darker than IR. IR has so much more fight in it than aMSP. This one is so serene and contemplative. It's also groovier than IR. There are moments that are more reminiscent of Ok Computer than anything they've done since then.

Idk I think Bodysnatchers is pretty sinister and Jigsaw gets really anxious

The rest of the tracks are a mixture of sad and pretty, the lyrical themes are less doomsday than a typical RH album

Not to be disparaging IR which I think about half of is RH at their best

Could be their best album of you mixed in the Bsides

This is true, but I think the themes shift back to personal emotional pain to a greater degree than any album since The Bends. Videotape is the darkest closer of any album IMO.

I hear aMSP as being a bit more cosmic and looking at the universe with this kind of slightly amused, detached pessimism a la OKC or Kid A. But just sonically, I also think this one is lighter and spacier whereas IR is kind of warm and dark.

Decks Dark

"There's a spacecraft blocking out the sky and there's no way out" and that big practically gothic moaning over orchestra breakdown

Right after Burn the Witch with the line "a low flying panick attack" and frantic dissonant strings

Edit: well not "right" after I just skip Daydreaming

regardless I love this album. It makes me happy that Radiohead can continue to challenge me with something that I'm not sure how to process at first and then come to understand after spending more time on it.

repeat listens really highlight how organic these songs are. It's kind of funny that on the surface it's bleep bloop music but it's basically all being done with live instruments this time

When did Elphenor become Radiohead's answer to Monte?

That's not too punk.

Post the quote. I think a lot of the hype of their modern albums is a little unwarranted, but I respect the artistic merit involved to just dive head first and create exactly what you want no matter how different it is from the music that made you famous. But instead of evolving into new territory they've seemed to hit a wall and it's more of the same.

Yeah man... Same predictable, one-trick pony Thom Yorke thing going on. Guy just sounds too complacent at this point... Covering no new ground at all.

I mean, I'm a big fan of his and all, but I can't help but think he's just getting lazy and uninspired.

does anyone remember when rock and roll was supposed to be dangerous?

rock stars burning out at a young age was the way it worked.

johnny rotten or johnny thunders weren't meant to bve doing that act at age 50d

did everybody forget the history of elvis?

there's so much emphasis on live fast die young and leave a beautiful corpse, but getting fat and middle aged and dying of a prescription med overdose while taking a shit is honestly the most fitting end to anything in rock music

Present Tense in 2009. I didn't even recognize this song on the album at first because they made it so lush and beautiful as opposed to minimalist wailing. Thom Yorke is great but he needs the other members to temper him. Can't believe I called aMSP a Thom Yorke solo album at first. Clearly I wasn't listening hard enough.

i'm not even a radiohead fan and i remember that song/video when it came out - he's basically playing an old country blues tune

I love the rhythm in the studio version. not sure if that's like a bossanova beat or what but the song sounds like tripping shrooms in a magical fairy forest

Bought the deluxe version because I'm a sucker.

10/10, better than TKOL, fantastic, they still got it, blah blah blah.

I still don't think it's as good as IR, but it's very good. It took me 5-10 listens before I realized I loved it, but it's been a long time since I listened to a new album over and over like that. My current feeling is that it fits right in the middle of their catalogue quality-wise, with Pablo Honey, httt, Amnesiac, and King of Limbs below it and OKC, the Bends, Kid A, and IR above it.
