Question Do u tend 2 listen 2 full albums or nah

I grew up on cassettes and records, and made the transition to CDs probably several years after they became the standard, so I'm very accustomed to just listening to an album front-to-back every time. I made plenty of mix tapes back when tapes were a thing, but those were usually for gifts or road trips or something, not for popping into my Walkman every day. 95% of my playlists on Spotify are just albums I want to find quickly again, which I realize probably means I'm using it wrong.

What about you folks; what's your preference these days? And if you feel like it, can you give your age or age range? Curious if there's an age divide here.

9 times out of 10 i'm shuffling my itunes library from my phone which is all physical junk i buy and get download codes for

i have spotify for the cases when i NEED to listen to an album ASAP

but even most of my spotify usage is just basically a shuffled playlist of the vibe i want to hear

i'd say about half and half, but i almost never listen to music intently anymore, always in the background. some albums are just good for work so i listen to them over and over when i need to go all out (i get paid for production not hourly)

Surprised at the responses so far tbh.

I definitely listen to full albums all the time. A great album is my favorite form of music.

I'll often shuffle as well obvsly, but I never made a single playlist in my life. I do it manually. I don't like the idea of having a list of stuff I generally like just coming on willy nilly. I need intent to listen.

I don't have any playlists, either. Just select a song at a time. I actually don't have any saved music at all at the moment, I just stream

I am, too! I realize a lot of folks here are probably about my age and had a similar experience, but I really felt like most people had moved on primarily to just going favorite song by favorite song, now that that's so easy to do.

I'm trying to get into this mix mentality and it's good for Spotify where I just like somebody's single, or I hear one song I like by a new artist and throw it in a mix to remind me to try more from them. Otherwise, though, I'm often finding it hard to grab one song off an album I like. I've been trying to make mixes for friends for a few years, and there are some albums where I just don't think there's a standout track necessarily; all the songs add up to something greater. Probably my bias but I'm trying, okay, I'm trying

What's your age? I'm 32, so as the epitome of a millennial, I've had a foot in both worlds in every facet of life, including music consumption.

For rock music, I do tend to listen to albums, or at least all of the songs I like on an album. For pop, I don't listen to a whole pop album ever and just cherry pick songs/artists until I'm out of that mood. Same with rap.

I also mindlessly listen to ambient stuff, which I guess is often provided as an auto generated playlist and I don't have any particular affinities for artists in that genre, so I'm usually fine with whatever.

Thumbs up

Straight pop stuff is often easier for me to pick off an album, yeah.

Feel weird giving an exact age, but I was in high school when MCIS came out, so, Gen X.

With pop, I'm only really interested in the singles. I'm not on the hunt for Ke$ha deep cuts.

It's also obvious in pop albums that there are filler songs, whereas with rock albums there is generally more artistry woven throughout, considering they are actually written by that band.

even with a giganto record collection, i mostly shuffle at work during the day. when i'm at home i might play a record or two per night. but sometimes none at all. it's a library. it's just there.

I'm an album guy.

If I'm listening to an album on the Spotify, I'll listen to the mixed playlist of songs the algorithm thinks I will like based on the album I listened to. I'll favourite the tracks I like and check out the full albums later.

However, if I listen to a shoegaze album, the algorithm will trap me in a loop of the exact same songs I've heard a million times before instead of showing me new cool shit.

I'll skip through tracks or occasionally let the algorithm decide if I'm riding the bus or something

at home I'll listen to a full record or tape

when I'm DJing obviously Im selecting individual tracks

That actually exists, and it's found on children's YouTube videos, set to flashing animation and peppered with discordant sound effects

i want to make sure i understand - when and if you're performing as a disc jockey - you're actually choosing what song plays next?

Then I'm going to one-up them by making mixes of individual beats of songs.
