I don't get the love for the Beatles later stuff. Sure they were a great band throughout their career, but they also recorded average stuff like Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Piggies, Good Night, When I'm Sixty Four, Bungalow Bill, Rocky Raccoon, Maggie Mae, Mean Mr. Mustard, Doctor Robert etc. The early albums were their peak in my opinion.

adore does sound dated. i like the record and some of the songs are among my favorites (blank page, for martha, shame...) but honestly it just reeks of corgan's failed attempt at blending the pumpkins with the pop and electronica-oriented genres that the mainstream was beginning to center around while rock'n'roll was slowly dying. and this counts mostly for the electronica-influenced part of the album - that's where the production sounds very dated.

Yeah, I've personally never understood all the fuss over Adore. I mean it has about 5 great songs and the rest I could do without and some just borders on being embarrassing. Some of the electronic elements have aged about as well as old milk.

Yeah, definitely a throwaway track for me too. It's the back end of the album that I think drags the release down a bit.

I'll get pelted with eggs for saying this, but I think even a song like Hummer is grossly overrated.

I don't wanna sound like I'm shitting on Siamese Dream though. I do concur that it's one of the best albums of the 90's... Just perhaps a little overrated among the Netphoria faithful.

You know, I'm not saying they don't. I just thought it was a question that was worth asking and perhaps debating.

The honest truth is that even the most celebrated and legendary albums have their blemishes, so I mean the idea of a "perfect" album is almost impossible to find.

Even Weezers Blue album which is one of my favorite pop albums of the 90's has a couple tracks that I could do without and it's only 10 songs long... Most notably Surf Wax America... I Never understood why people like that song so much.

Lmao come on. The outros the coolest part of the song no doubt, but best thing they ever recorded? There's like a handful of better moments on that one album alone.

No. It's not. It never is. "__ is overrated/underrated" is lazy criticism.

One man's blemish is another man's genius.

Surf Wax is fine.

when are people going to realize that their "Mellon Collie single disc" albums are all different and the fact that no one can actually agree on one is glaring evidence that putting it out as a double-album was the right choice

one of the best things, yes. go ahead, name the handful of better moments on that album alone

only other ones i can come up with are the solo (that they play as a dual solo) live right before the ending ("she really likes to break..." etc) part of Geek USA, and the solo to the "let the sadness come again..." etc part of soma. and i still think hummer outro is better. it's completely immersive and beautiful. it's like being in a cleansing morning storm, it's perfect

If this Spawn of Satan, this Tool of Morgoth, this Slave of the Harkonnen isn't perma ip banned I will be forced to take drastic measures and report his carcass to the secret police of the GSGE (Greater Serbian Galactic Empire).

then this thread is a bit pointless, ain't it?

I mean, of course all the albums are overrated by the hardcore fans, what do you expect? that's just the way people are, you can't really debate much over that. i mean like, i'm sure if you went to a tool forum and tried to argue among their hardcore fans how their music isn't pure art and the transcendental spiritual uber-music that they think it is (i have nothing against the music itself btw, just the fans), I'm pretty sure you'd get bashed for it.

i don't think it's just siamese dream and mellon collie that get put on a pedestal around here, as far as i've seen, all 88-00 SP material is overpraised around here. that's normal, why is it worth making a thread about that? did you just now have the epiphany that fans tend to overrate their favorite band's stuff?

an interesting question that this thread sparks, though, is how things could have played out for the pumpkins in terms of merely different releases.

their discography could have gone any number of other ways, and in an alternate universe it's sd+pisces making up the double record in their catalogue, and MCIS was indeed trimmed and released as a power-cd.

i wonder how that would affect the pumpkins' trajectory

man that would have been a badass record
