I tried to watch Superbad back when I was maybe in high school, but I fell asleep. The parts I was awake for weren't funny. Even as a teenager, I found the humour juvenile and chauvinistic.
I also refused to watch Green Hornet after I found out that they were making a screwball comedy out of one of my favourite childhood TV shows (the Van Williams/Bruce Lee show was the GOAT). I'm interested in seeing The Disaster Artist, though. |

Hostiles – C
this movie is long and boring, has almost no story, the characters are just a hair above two-dimensional, and left me wondering wtf I was supposed to take from it. The dialogue is very annoying and makes a fairly poor attempt to be sparse, mysterious, and "rugged," just like everything about the movie, except that instead of seeming genuine, it seems like a movie trying way too hard to capture this sort of atmosphere of other serious Westerns. Not sure how many more 5 minute sequences I could watch of someone saying something to Christian Bale, him staring dead-eyed off into space, finally responding, "yep," and then stoically rubbing his face/eyes/mouth etc. like a caricature of some hardened western dude. I am tempted to point out how the film racistly presents Native Americans as a polarized dichotomy of savage animal behavior vs. noble mystical outdoorsmen, but the white characters are just as similarly predictable, boring, and rehashed. I would have given it a D except the scenery was really nice to look at |

Superbad is great, really. I laugh my ass off whenever I see it. I'm pretty easily amused. Michael Cera's characters usually really resonate with me, I'm really awkward and shy in real life. DK, you should totally revisit it. |

Hidden Figures – B
I enjoyed this movie and the subject matter was really fascinating/uplifting. It's kind of sad that it's such a big deal when a Hollywood type movie strays from the 4 stories/historical events that such films always center on. The characters are written well and I liked the acting, even though Sheldon from Big Bang Theory was a major character (wtf really?). I loved Janelle Monáe's and Kevin Costner's characters especially. And yeah it's p. fucking amazing these people sent humans into space and the movie did a good job showing the audience how much we take these historical events for granted at this point. The downside? Not a particularly thorough movie which ultimately suffers from this sort of Tom Hanks Hollywood feel-good glossy quality. I felt that there must have been more we could have delved into and learned about these characters, especially the black female characters. We are shown a lot of the racism and sexism that is thrown at them, but overall it's mostly treated like "omg look how borderline humorously absurd racism is," instead of really digging into how dehumanizing and awful and dark this all must have been for these people. A good and enjoyable, but not "great" film. |

House Party 5 - AKA Mother!
From bible-thumping to bible-bashing to bible-bludgeoning, Aronofksy goes heavy-handed on the metaphors with mixed results. J-Law commits to a thankless role but the film never slows down enough for any of its big and bold ideas to stick. Great imagery, somewhat soggy storytelling. But again, that was probably the point. One of those rare instances where I don't know how to rate the film. Soup was fucking fantastic though. |

Just a beautiful beautiful film. You should go see it if you haven't. And if you have and didn't like you have no soul and I don't wanna be your friend. |

The Cloverfield Paradox - 2/5
I had some fun with a few silly moments but overall a pretty bad movie. I don't get why they're haphazardly trying to build this series together out of a bunch of disparate projects they just slap the name cloverfield on, but whatevs. |

Battle of the Sexes - 4/5
A little corny and melodramatic in spots, but the event itself was pretty amazing and the story of Billie Jean King is very inspiring. I recommend it. |

Token Black Marvel Cinematic Universe Superhero Solo Movie That Should Have Came Out Eons Ago
Good. Damn Good. Definitely a landmark superhero movie; it's anything but your typical run-of-the-mill MCU movie with crazy powers and an overabundance of CGI. Wonderful production design, fun dialogue, exciting action and a villain you wish was in the movie a little more (Michael B. Jordan's Killmonger might be the most interesting MCU antagonist yet). Deals with issues that are relevant in the real world as well. It may still in the end stick to the basic MCU movie formula, but its heart and soul stands out among its MCU peers. See this. Now. A- / A |
