i'm really just referring to its potential as negative campaign fodder. i think he's skirted liability well enough that it wouldn't be a big deal for him.

I agree with this. His run could be exactly like Obama's 2008. Looks the part of a fresh face with a firm ideology. Would almost certainly get in the white house and be as terrible as Obama.

so it turns out chris christie is going to have a field day with the press. Lately, he's got quite an appetite for paninis.

there's enough democrats who only vote dem because of gays and abortion and such, they'd love to slash taxes and act like money grubbing short term dickheads

well I guess never say never cause there were people here saying obama had no chance in 2006, but I just do not see that happening. Libertarians are very negatively stigmatized by both parties. For a lot of democrats, "libertarian" is as far out there as "socialist" to a Republican. You may have a small number of liberal defectors go for Paul, just like how a small number of them are suckers for his dad, but I am unconvinced that he has any shot in hell

you're talking about people who give a shit about political theory, the average "democrat" dickhead is really just about abortions and gays so if you take that whole shit out of the reptillian party then you have a new audience to market to.

I think you are severely underestimating how deeply the ideological lines have been dug. Most democrats are not only about gay marriage and abortion, income inequality and the evil of the 1% has become just as potent an issue. It will take far more than some idiot who wants to slash taxes to get young people on board with the GOP.

hey man, you could be right, like I said never say never and 2016 is still a long way off. I just personally do not feel that Rand Paul could be any more successful in attracting voters than his dad. Yeah, some libs will vote for him because weed and gtfo of the world's business, but I think for the most part, the dems are very, very entrenched and we are much more likely to see political realignment amongst the GOP, which is tearing itself apart and has devolved into a state of complete non-self-awareness.

edit: I mean that the GOP could become more fractured and divided, not that many repubs would vote liberal

got to give rand credit not too long ago when he said the GOP will probably never have another president in his lifetime unless unless the party itself sees a sea change (he was probably being hyperbolic.. sure there'll be a couple of republicans who eke their way into the office over the years regardless).. he admits they're literally obsolete, whereas his contemporaries believe (or pretend to believe) that digging their hole deeper is going to save conservatism

they have dug the hole so deep they can't see over the sides. right before the 2012 election, how many conservatives do you guys know who were totally sure Obama was toast? Because pretty much every republican I know, and every pundit on tv, was completely certain romney had it in the bag. When you compare this to Nate Silver's number voodoo, which called the election 100% accurately, these guys just have no fucking idea what is going on outside their front doors

Rand Paul is seeking to make his father’s ideology more palatable to the moneymen and -women of the GOP, as well as to the Republican rank and filers who otherwise dominate early state voting.

...

“He is an anti-empire guy, but he does it without spouting a lot of anti-empire rhetoric,” Doherty said. “He knows that the Republican base is a lot more patriotic than that. Ron had no problem saying we are being bad overseas. Rand doesn’t talk like that.”

...
“Ron Paul created his vote. His people were not previously Republicans. They were disaffected, anti-government activists who hated the political process. He drew them from those Americans who don’t vote, and a lot of them are going to go back to not voting.”

That is true. The fawning over Obama from 2006-09 was sickening.
