I'm pretty sure he said he was going to be playing on the album, called him up & said "Do some vocals & that Cure guitar thing".

It's all vox. An MP3 would be no different than a lossless file. At least to the human ear. Vocals require much less bandwidth/frequency to be reproduced sufficiently.
