Can someone explain Aerosmith's success in the 90s?
During the reign of grunge and pop punk they managed to have huge success with their dinosaur dad rock. Was it the Alicia Silverstone videos that helped?

Well yeah that's true but stuff that sounds like dad rock? In the early and mid 90s?

i might be wrong but i think movie tie ins really helped them as well. like dude looks like a lady and dont wanna miss a thing. at least with the kiddie crowd. i had their greatest hits (big ones?) and i had a friend who had all of their albums

You might actually have a point with Mr. Big. Wind of Change came out in January 1991 before grunge took off. And neither Bryan Adams or Joshua Kadison are dad rock. They are more soft rock / adult contemporary. I can think of lots of soft rock hit songs in the 90s.

Skid Row and extreme were very early 90's with their success. They were kinda gone by like 1993.
Aerosmith managed to remain successful throughout the whole 90's but its pretty much the same phenomenon as say bon jovi. I remember thinking Bed of Roses sounded so...old....and by old i meant late 80's. Definitely for Aerosmith the Silverstone Liv Tyler videos helped a lot. As someone who has pretty much retroactively denied grunge of much merit (cause yeah I did listen to some back then) I think the 90's was the worst decade ever for music (probably a stupid thing to say on a SP forum...) and the success of BJ (why does no one call them that? Hmm...) and Aerosmith doesn't help. But that's just like, my opinion man. |

yesh...those borderline Lolita vids of his daughter and Silverstone were a hit.
But during the 70's they partied like no other band and HAD to take a decade off and came back with some decent music for them. It was an actual comeback for a band that people had either forgotten or thought they were dead. One of the first shows I ever saw was Guns n' Roses opening for them, considering the moment was right at GnR's pre-peak and Aerosmith's full comeback moment, its still one of the best shows I ever saw. |
