Too funny. Mike was not even alive when the band recorded "Starla." Nicole has absolutely nothing to add. Jeff, being the next most senior member in that lineup, tries to act like he knows what he's talking about by discussing the b-sides on different "I Am One" releases.

didn't watch this clip, so im not sure if he does it in this specific instance -- but what's especially awkward on other such occasions i've seen is that billy solicits responses from jeff, looking to him as though he was actually there or somehow possesses james' memories

either that or he expects him to have acquired a comprehensive knowledge of the band's chronology/discography, though something tells me it's the former and not the latter

super weird

anyway, one of my favorite starlas, despite the unfortunate recording quality, is from 11-27-96. i only discovered it a year or two ago, having never previously known that it was played during the mcis era.

i like hearing it within that context (mcis era), i like that it's a relative rarity, and the solo is pure bc deliciousness

Exactly what goes down here. I also find it funny that he will say things like, "when we recorded this song."

I remember reading a review someone posted of a 2010 show. He mentioned that before they played "Drown," Billy was trying to tell a story about recording the song and how drunk Jimmy was the first time they tried to record it. Billy asked some question about the incident, and looked around the stage to ask one of the band members what they remembered. The reviewer said you could see the look of "well that's weird" on Corgan's face when he realized there was no one left, besides himself, who actually played on the original song.

From what Billy wrote on the Smashing Pumpkins site a few years ago and from various interviews, it seemed clear that, somewhere along the way, he got really bored playing with this lineup. Re-watching some of these videos, it's clear he was tired of them by this point (late 2012), but Billy kept going with them for quite a while. When I saw them about half a year later (May 2013), they sounded ok, but it was clear the band had absolutely no chemistry together. I wonder at what point Billy finally decided to move on from Mike and Nicole.

On the other hand, when I saw the band in July 2015 (a lineup that only played together a few months), the band sounded tight as hell.

I've seen drum machines with more range and subtlety than Mike Burns
