I was intrigued when he joined SP. WPC had always chose female bassists..he was always trying to replace D’arcy, they were only in the band because she couldn’t be.

And then there was Jack Bates. He wasn’t there to fill that role. He was such a talented bassist and performer that it made WPC willing to leave behind the classic SP dynamic and image.

A little later when he challenged d’arcy with that “you think you’re better than jack bates” line it made me really sit up and take notice. WPC was really putting it out there. Jack Bates is the last boss of bass playing and D’arcy had no chance of beating him.

When I saw the band during the shiny tour I got to see and hear what jack Bates is all about. Needless to say I was stunned by his ability and style.

incubator that is a nice post you just made but you got a couple of things horribly wrong:

first off, Billy's trend of hiring male bassists did not start with Master Bates, it started when he accidentally approached the long-haired Killers bassist from behind in a club, thinking he was a woman at first but only seeing long hair & a bass guitar. "Hot damn, hey there little lady, you ever played bass with a real band & had all the fucking hot dogs you could ever possibly want?" asked our Lord & Saviour. When Killer turned around, William Patrick made the hasty move of keeping with it in an attempt to save face. "Oh shit, you're Bill Corgan!" said Killer. & the rest is history

as for M Bates's inclusion in the group, you fuckin' know Billy has the hard-on of 7 suns from the mere fact that a spawn of a Joy Division/New Order member is in his camp. who wouldn't?

Like you said, the guy from Killers thing was an accident. Billy thought he was a girl, so technically he was still a D'Arcy replacement.

Personally I don't think Jack Bates lineage has any factor in his employment with SP. WPC takes the band and his music very seriously. He hires the right man for the job, end of.
