Default This magnificent animal graced me with its presence in its final moments

Two days ago I was coming into my house and noticed this majestic fucking beast perched on the wall next to my front door. I was pretty surprised, as I've never seen bug quite like this one before... I took the picture below and wished him well in his travels.

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...G_9877copy.jpg

The next morning, he had crawled down the wall and recessed himself into the corner. I was concerned, but decided to wait a bit and see if he hastened forth on his adventures. Later in the day he was still there, and I came to grips with the fact that this King of the Insects had expired on my doorstep

I collected his body and placed it in an airtight container. His wings were open when I placed him in there, but they closed over the night... insect rigor mortis I guess. Has anyone ever pinned and mounted a butterfly or moth? I feel like I shouldn't let this beautiful fellow march quietly into the night... he deserves to be remembered.

Also, I did a little bit of research, and it seems he was a very long way from home

He could also be one of these, they are closely related and I can't tell the difference from the pictures

Yes, but apparently you don't. It might be an introduced species but I can find nothing on the internet suggesting it is invasive.

What's That Bug – Oleander Hawk Moth

Quote:
This truly beautiful moth has an extensive range due to the use of its larval food plant, the Oleander, in landscaping. Bill Oehlke has the following information posted to his awesome website: “primarily associated with ‘the southern Mediterranean region, North Africa and the Middle East to Afghanistan (Ebert, 1969). Along the Mediterranean, there is no clear distinction between resident and migrant populations. Permanent populations exist in suitable locations in Sicily, Crete and Cyprus; however, over a number of favourable years further colonies may be established in those islands and also in southern Italy and southern Greece, all of which die out during a hard winter.’ and ‘Extra-limital range. From Afghanistan eastward to south-east Asia and the Philippines; as a migrant, it penetrates northwards into central Europe and central southern Asia. In 1974, this species was recorded as having established itself in Hawaii.

I didn't think it flew across the fucking ocean, jesus christ.

Invasive is like the stink bug. It damages the ecosystems it enters. I've never in 23 years seen another moth like this. Pretty sure it's not common in the US.

Maryland. It's not common here. Trots, I don't know what kind of Texan wasteland you live in, but here in Maryland the suburbs of DC are only about 25 minutes from straight up farmland. I don't live inside. I have spent a good portion of my life in the bucolic countrysides of this land of little woods and rivers.

i just kind of picture you from some self contained gated community that has regular pesticide sprays, you know that listless, still, dull atmosphere that so often creates wonderful individuals of great repute

I'd have to use pesticides thankfully my parents' property doesn't have any ash trees. They've got a poor old american elm tree with a bad case of dutch elm disease, an introduced disease from an introduced species. I mean when do you see elms?

BTW not an invasive species in MD. If you check out Hawaii on that population distribution map, you can see green indicates an established population of some sort. It's an uncommon bug here.
