I'm so furious that the NFL didn't give a shit until this video popped up. Like wtf did you think happened in that elevator, Roger? She knocked herself out? Same for the Ravens - oh now that we can SEE one human being brutalizing another, NOW we give a shit? It's an abhorrent failure, and Roger Goodell basically ignored it, as did Harbaugh, who could've broken his knees with how quickly he dropped to them to start fellating Rice.
Should've happened sooner. Much sooner. The video didn't change a damn thing, other than demonstrating what he did that night. Also college is pretty different in that a lot of those kids, and they are just kids, aren't even old enough to drink yet. They're over 18, but they still live on campus, don't have full time jobs... So on one hand I think it's wonderful they're giving people the opportunity to make themselves into millionaires. On the other, they're horrendously overpaid for the value they actually add to society. But that's the market and I can't complain about that. And I think a lot of them do learn discipline, between practice and workouts... but the extra step would be actually making them learn. Making these people go to class, REAL classes, balance work and play, and be more than a football player. But that's a whole other thread. |

Lions looked solid today. Still need to cut down on the dumb penalties and get a little more out of their ground game, but their pass offense and defense looked pretty sharp.

Yeah Phillie everything is insufferable.
9er fans are bad, Packers fans are bad, Raider fans are terrible, Steeler fans are bad, Patriots fans are bad. |

The Pack is OK. At least they have a solid socialist tradition of winning in Green Bay. What's insufferable about Lions fans is that despite a generation of miserable team management and even after setting a record for the worst season in NFL history, they think that "next year" the Lions might go all the way! It's Pie in the Sky when you die, thanks to Bill Ford.
In Michigan they also seem to draw from the same pool of low IQ mouth breathers that support MSU for college football. Way too much overlap to be a coincidence. |

State fans are like lions fans because they know they're supporting a second rate program. They have a huge chip on their shoulders about it too. Not unlike people from Columbus, OH. Except that Ohio is actually a pretty good university.
MSU is a shitty college with average students and nothing going for it except a world class veterinary hospital. When it comes down to it the only thing the fans of MSU have to be proud of is a feeder program for the NBA and an occasionally good football team. Who in the fuck would want to be a "fan" of that? |

You can't pick who you like based on the fans though. Unless you're the Raiders, the fans aren't really anything you have a say in. You just have to like the team you like. It'd be like choosing to dislike a band because of their fans. Limp Bizkit aside, a band like Radiohead can't control how snooty its fans are.

I'm talking about the quality of the university. Not just whether their football team won more games last year. Its not just about the one athletic team.
Part of being a fan of a college program is being a fan of the school, not just the football team. Within the big ten MSU isn't in the same league when it comes to academic quality as Universities like Michigan or Northwestern. |

What kind of obnoxious person brings up academic prestige in a discussion about athletics. Nonsense.

If being a fan of a college was just about the football program Florida State fans would have bragging rights. But just like MSU FSU ranks higher on the list of schools worth partying at than graduating from.

I'm not a fan. I'm an alum. I honestly don't care what the football team's record is this year.

while consistently dominant on the college level, MSU has struggled to produce NBA talent since 2000. Zach Randolph is the only real star player to come out of MSU in that time. Jason Richardson had a few seasons where he would have qualified as a star, but he was all athleticism so when he got hurt it was over. Only three other guys I'd not as decent role players and one of them is only a 3 yr vet. I will say that Adiren Payne and Gary Harris look like they could reverse this trend, but the hey days of the 80s and 90s with Magic, scott skiles, steve smith, kevin willis etc are over.

In my experience, ND fans are generally realistic until something good happens (like say a 31-0 throttling of Michigan), at which point everyone gets the idea that they can beat Florida State.
I may be a little guilty of this (but shit, goddamn ESPN has Golson fifth in the heisman race now). I think even most Texas fans knew this year and probably the next year or two were going to be rough. Not 41-7 against BYU rough, but rough. I guess this conversation should be in the other thread. I blame Scotty. |
