From the moment I heard The Joy Formidable, they reminded me of another band that I couldn't quite place. I think it's these guys...maybe just the vocals:

Monkeystrikes - Pocket to Drown

It's either them or Catatonia (gotta love Welsh accents).

So this is a full fledged revival scene now. You have Joy Formidable, Yuck, Pains of Being Pure At Heart, and you could even ******* Silversun Pickups.

My Vitriol is easily the best of the SP-sounding bands.
I've loved them for a long time and I really wish they put out more music.

To me they sound more like Machina era pumpkins though, at least the shoegazey guitar tones.

In terms of just pure songwriting ability I think Bradford Cox right now is equivalent to Billy Corgan in his prime. There are a lot of similarities not just in their look/sound but also in their career path and excellent b-side output (although SP obviously had a much bigger fan base in their heyday than deerhunter has this could be chalked up to what type of music is popular today and not so much billy's ability to write a single over bradford's ability).

I always thought of Brian Molko and Placebo as having the closest career trajectory to the Pumpkins. The first two albums are grungy, Pixies inspired as well as dream pop inspired. On the third album they got more eclectic. The fourth album found them going in a electronic / trip hop direction. The fifth album found them returning to rock.

god Placebo are awful.

which brings me to the Pains of Being Pure At Heart: what a horrible, bland band.

I don't think this sound ever really went away, just out of vogue, and some obscure indie bands tapping into it doesn't really constitute a revival. Maybe Silversun and Pains aren't THAT obscure, but come on, no one knows who they are unless you are into "the scene."

Radiohead followed this path as well, except a return to rock because they were too smart for that

I would actually kind of agree with whoever said no one really sounds like the Pumpkins. The bands inspired by the Pumpkins do not come nearly as close to replicating that sound or songwriting style, as say 2nd generation Nirvanas or something. I would attribute this to extremely high musicianship and truly unique songwriting. Also, I can't think of many bands of any genre from any time period that put as much production effort into their music as the Pumpkins... I can STILL listen to MCIS and hear buried tracks I have never heard before.

Nah man, it's kind of true. I can pick out bands that sound like Nirvana and Tool clones, for example, but as for the Pumpkins I can really only points to bits and pieces of certain elements in other bands that sound like them (but not the whole package.)

don't be such a spiteful dick for no reason, trots. Think about it. What about Joy Formidable is reminiscent of the Pumpkins? Big guitar sound? They don't really sound like the Pumpkins very much at all, except in a "they probably listened to Siamese Dream a lot when they were kids" kind of way

also, Silversun Pickups are mainstream? they are more obscure than any popular indie band right now, i.e. Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, whatever

yeah this guy at work that was a total san antonio-type was all up on that band and to me that means it's basically mainstream.

and i'm not being a dick. if i hear something and I go "O HAY THAT SOUNDS LIKE SP" i don't subject it to scrutiny. TJF sounds like SP because of the pop qualities and the squall of sound. Pains of Being have that one song Belong that totally sounds like SD era Smashing Pumpkins and I'm not the only one to point this out. And if listening to SD when they were kids is the only link then there's still a motherfucking link, it's really not difficult. Pixies occasionally sound like the Velvets, are they a carbon copy knock off? Good god no.

You guys are thinking way too hard, and putting the Pumpkins on a pedestal, as if they exist in some kind of musical vacuum where no band influences them and nobody is influenced by them. Seriously yawl, when I say early SP sounds like My Bloody Valentine I don't mean they sound exactly like them, they took inspiration from them and it's evident in the sound and the actual fact of the matter.

the drummer for Japandroids reminds me of Jimmy with his penchant for ludicrous fills. So they remind me of SP without sounding all that much like them.
