Sugar Ray and the likes just encapsulated the severe wrong turn US rock went in the late 90s - everything Kurt Cobain was against.
They had more than one hit. Every song was more of a radio heavy rotation shit ear worm.

The late 90s was plagued with numetal, rap rock, and boy bands as well as a wave of this laid back hybrid of pop, hip-hop, and other stuff like reggae. Europe was more nuanced and delivered fantastic music like Morcheeba, Portishead, Gomez, Zero 7, Sneaker Pimps and the like. In America, we had - well ... Sugar Gay.

Billy saw Mark on The Celebrity Apprentice and befriended him in hopes that he would introduce him to Trump.

Not over here (Ireland / UK) they didn't. They are literally known for one song, and barely anyone would remember it even at that. They are there with Smash Mouth / Third Eye Blind / Bran Van 3000 / Wheatus as one of those American bands that people liked a song by, once.

I will defend Third Eye Blind though over Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray. Stephen Jenkins is a douche but he's a better songwriter than McGrath or what's-his-name from Smash Mouth.

& yeah, that first Third Eye album mighta been better than anything the other bands ever put out, but they still pretty much had the same number of hits at about the same time playing on the same stations. They're always gonna be linked to those bands/that "movement" in the same way there will always be people who call the Pumpkins grunge, or Deftones nu-metal

that being said their career doesn't exactly compare to those two, at all

thanks a LAH-HOT!

That first Third Eye album was somehow amazing. I ignored Semi-charmed Kind of Life for months. I just lumped it in with all that post grunge nonsense like Dickswalla and Sponge or whatever, but then the lyrics were a little edgy and the album had 4-5 strong songs. Can't say I heard anything after.

I know. I'm sorry. It's that sort of behavior that I just displayed that has institutionalized the hate and prejudice of western Europeans and kept them down for so long. They will have their day!

While I like most of Zero 7's debut album, they were so much in thrall to Air that it was almost funny.

"Every Morning" was 1999. Big albums on the UK side (not necessarily only by UK artists) at that time were:

- Blur "13"
- Moby "Play"
- Travis "The Man Who"
- Ian Brown "Golden Greats"
- Stereophonics "Performance and Cocktails"
- Sigur Ros "Agætis Byrjun"
- Chemcial Brothers "Surrender"
- Jamiroquai "Synkronized"
- Leftfield "Rhythm and Stealth"
- Robbie Williams "I've Been Expecting You"
- Santana "Supernatural"

Not a stellar year for classic albums. In the US you had "Enema of the State", "Significant Other", and other such nonsense, never mind the likes of Backstreet Boys and Christina (who were equally popular in the UK).

Here's the top Billboard albums for 1999, our friends Sugar Crap are number 37: https://www.billboard.com/charts/yea...ard-200-albums

Here's a similar list for the UK: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...the_1990s#1999

I've enjoyed most of their stuff. The second album felt like it was rushed out and wasn't as strong as their debut, but their later stuff (which got largely ignored because the cultural zeitgeist had moved on by then) was much better. Out of the Vein is probably my favorite of their albums. Ursa Major, Dopamine and the We Are Drugs EP are all pretty solid too. I only ever listen to them in the summer though; their music just kinda fits when the weather is warm.

"Wounded" by Third Eye Blind is an incredible song. It's a shame Jenkins was an asshole and pushed Kevin Cadogan and Arion Salazar out of the band.

Yeah, the States were in a bad place in the late 90s. I hung on with the Pumpkins, but found bands like Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, and QOTSA. Largely I turned to UK/Europe for the chill alt-electronic bands I mentioned like Morcheeba and Portishead, even more electronic for Air and groups like the Propellerheads, but mostly to the retro revival alt-rock like The Verve, Supergrass, Gomez, and lots more, but those 3 bands are seriously fucking amazing.
