Default Five Guantanamo Detainees Say They Planned Sept. 11

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/10/us...g9l/orhoPApsrg

all 5 at once?

now that the place is shutting down?

a real terrorist admits it up front and is proud of it

#1 this isn't the first time they admitted it
#2 this was essentially a joint document that they all signed together, it wasn't like all 5 stood up independently

Interesting thoughts

The media has spent all day rehashing this, calling in military experts to decipher the minds of the accused without ONCE asking the two obvious question: how and why?

-How did these 5 men discuss and approve this statement if some of them and their attorneys were not even aware of it?

-Why did the court happen to accept this filing given the above issue?

-Why did the court decide to release this to the public, despite years of secrecy on everything else, including denying access to something as basic as current photographs of the accused?

-Why is this being released now?

-How does it benefit anyone to release this this to the public? (it only benefits one group of people)

BTW, want to learn more about the Military Tribunals watch Edward MacMahon

This shit is so old, who cares.

I love how Republicans act like the fact that Gitmo is getting axed implies that we will now allow its prisoners to roam the streets in the US freely. Jon Stewart hit the nail on the head as always...

It's not about a fear of just cutting them loose. That's oversimplifying the problem. The reason people don't want these guys held in their neck of the woods is because anywhere that these guys are held ostensibly becomes a terror target. Right now, it's not a huge problem, because no one's going to try and break these guys out of Guantanimo, considering that it's a military installation surrounded by nothing but miles and miles of ocean. But who's to say what happens when we move onto US soil, where the security almost certainly is not going to match up? Do you really think your average federal courthouse is just as secure as what they have at Gitmo?

Granted, the chances of someone trying some kind of spectacular terrorist rescue on US soil are certainly remote. But at the same time, who would want to take on those chances in their neighborhood?

But I guess since Jon Stewart can laugh it all off, then the true authority has spoken.

When we make decisions based on fear, we are by definition doing what terrorists want us to do.

No we're not. Terrorists have specific agendas. They don't just settle for any old decision just as long as fear is the motivation. There's a big difference between "I'm scared. Let's change our foreign policy!" and "I'm scared. Let's do what we can to protect ourselves!" Fear is a means to an end for terrorists. It's not the end in and of itself.

And when we use torture as our means to our end we lower ourselves to their level! It's the same principle!

Simple. Keep them off U.S. soil. There's no reason that any of these people should have to be moved into middle America to get some sort of fair hearing on their status.

No. It's a different and completely unrelated principle. Nobody's talking about torture in any way shape or form.

The problem is that Stewart is kind of a hypocrite. He criticizes everyone else for being wrong, but whenever anyone calls him on the same the response is "nope, comic! Just comedy! Nothing more!"

Then he lashes into people in non-comedic fashion like he did the other night to Jim Cramer.

And it makes perfect sense. It's sad when a comedy show does a better job at putting things in perspective.
