Being a Shoegaze band named after an MBV song is the equivalent of being a hardcore band named after a Converge song.

Like what if there was actually an awesome new band called Smells Like Teen Spirit- would anyone seriously be able to take them seriously?

As lame as it is I kinda dig it. "The scene that celebrates itself" and whatnot.

I like the idea of eternal shoegaze, where bands just come and go doing their best MBV/Slowdive/Ride etc. impressions.

I've been revisiting a lot of Chapterhouse lately. A lot of good moments but god does that stuff sound dated. As far as newer shoegaze I'm really jazzed to finally see Ringo Deathstarr live next month. Been waiting for this.

I think there's a band called "The Aeroplane Flies High."

And Boris is named after a Melvins song, but it seems less awful when a band is named after some obscure song in a cult band's catalog than when they are named after lead single or well-known song or fucking platinum boxset collection.

Just came back from Swervedriver. They were awesome.

One of the two openers I saw (Slow Molasses or something) sucked. Just kind of mediocre britpop-inspired middle-of-the-road rock. The other opener, though, was a Chinese band called Birdstriking. They were wicked cool.

i used to work with this girl and one day she was chatting me up about music and shit and she asked me what some good "slowcore" bands were and i rattled off all the standard shoegaze and slowcore pinned bands and such. she said she had never heard of the ones i mentioned but was gonna check them out because "I just started getting into this kind of music. Lana Del Rey is amazing and i wish there were more musicians like her". and then i was like...i've never heard of this chick, i'll go give her a listen. and then i put a shotgun in my mouth, pulled the trigger and my brains splattered all over the wall behind me.

My shoegaze stories:

Back in the early 90s I saw Hope Sandoval buying underwear at a TJ Maxx.

I arrived 12 hours early for a Cocteau Twins show, walked in the back door of St Andrews Hall and spent the entire day hanging out and watching sound checks.

I got back stage at Lollapalooza the year that Jesus and Mary Chain was on the tour.

I touched Robert Smiths hair once in Detroit

I was in a record store back in the late 80s and literally bumped into Kevin Shields. He glared at me and said "excuse you!"

I met Billy corgan and all I got was his lousy autograph

Mazzy Star isn't shoegaze. Unless it's a shoegaze story cause she was with the Jesus and mary chain guy but then again they aren't really shoegaze. though, like the cure, i can see how they influenced the genre.

Haha, yeah, I don't think they are the most interesting of those bands, but good enough that I listen to them occasionally and would pay $25 to see them.

Del Ray is one of those names I hear a lot and know is out there but I know nothing about. But given the context of the post, I'm assuming the moment was like the time I was talking to someone about music, and she mentioned she liked some metal. I thought we might have some common ground until she said she added "like Underoath."

Dreampop is a close enough cousin to shoegaze that mentioning Mazzy didn't really bother me.

Robert Smith, tho, what the fuck was he doing in that post.

This is a total MBV homage, but one of the best ones I've heard. RIP Ben Curtis, a master of guitar effects and production.

"Kiss Me Sadly"/"Kiss Me Slowly" is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
