What does it matter that I don't offhandedly know the name of the first ever record label? I was referring to a group of record companies that sprang up when the phonograph was invented, capitalizing on a new technology that could record and play back music.

There were never any DIY recording artists in the late 1800s or early 1900s to begin with, because it was only commercial recording companies that possessed the technology. So from the very beginning, they're the ones that have made the rules about how music is consumed, and are the ones that cry foul when they are broken.

This is a thread about pirating music and people making a living as musicians, so it has a lot to do with it.

Anyway my point is is that whether pirating music is right or wrong, the record industry can't possibly stop music listeners at large obtaining it for free. So record companies want to make money for themselves and their musicians, they have to adapt to that.

I was talking about the name of the label on the cassette in the picture you posted from the article you copied and pasted.

It's alternative tentacles btw.

As far as the other misguided information you're spouting about DIY in the early 20th century there are/were plenty of radio performers who were recorded and let's not forget about a man named Alan lomax.

He built a "recording studio" on the back of a flatbed truck and these recordings were for himself and eventually the library of congress not exactly a record label.

Hmm what else just off the top of my head there were some Italian Futurists who pressed there own discs of experimental music at the turn of the century. To make tons of cash? Nope. For the love of the game.

My original point was that you're copying and pasting information irrelevant to the discussion but now you're just making stuff up.

Okay the early 1900's is a stretch, but my point still stands that when the phonograph was invented, there was no time wasted in making money from it, which is where the birth of the recording industry comes in, hasn't gone away since then.

I'm wouldn't deny that there were artists who adopted the technology for their art, but the fact that they existed alongside the record companies doesn't really change anything. The record companies wouldn't have been paying any attention to or drawn any inspiration from "some Italian Futurists". I'm not referring to Alan lomax's era either, because he comes in after the era that I'm talking about.

.
That's fair. But my point still stands that there have been DIY-ers since then as well.

And for those that want to make money from it, there are plenty that will adapt as consumers change the way they consume. As for the record industry, their idea of adaption is to pay their artists three thousandths of a cent or something when a song of theirs gets played on Spotify.

I find this actually really depends on the venue and how the band set up their gear. Being too close to the stage is only ever a problem if their amps and monitors overwhelm the stacks - the Twilight Sad, for example, just plain suck from the front row (the vocals ONLY come out of the PA stacks, and the instruments on stage are just too loud). But still, some of my favorite recordings come from the front row, when you're lucky and the stacks blend with the amps, giving a pretty nice stereo sound. For instance:

I rarely ever record full shows, though. If I were really serious about it, I'd buy better mics and worry more about positioning. But my results are definitely acceptable to me as mementos. I actually enjoy rewatching most of them from time to time, and that's all I aim for.

video-recording seems a lot less annoying than taking a whole lot of useless pics with flash. click click click click click click click click.

I'm not saying it's like morally wrong, I'm saying it's fucking lame and makes the experience of seeing a blistering rock band really boring
