Default Anyone have anything they'd like to say about Marilyn Manson's discography?

Mechanical Animals > The rest of it

He should have retired after Holy Wood and dedicated his time to painting.

Agreed, although I even question Holy Wood's need to exist from time to time.

I'm not gonna lie, I find this very unlikely. But you usually have good taste so maybe I will give them a listen

I want to like the music, because I like his personality. But I've never heard anything I really liked. If it's on, then whatever. But I've never chosen to listen on my own or anything. That's what I'd like to say.

Mechanical Animals is great. Killer spaced out glam rock. And yeah Pale Emperor was a great late period album. Didn't like the last one Heaven Upside Down as much.

Don't think I've actually heard a full album of his outside of Antichrist Superstar but I do like the singles from Mech Animals. Heard a lot of good things about Pale Emperor & his opening show with the Pupmkins was great. A friend of mine said they preferred his version of Personal Jesus to Depeche Mode's the other day which I considered blasphemy but his covers are usually at least interesting - Tainted Love & Sweet Dreams make PJ look essentially like a straight cover by comparison

MA is probably the standout, but I have a big soft spot for Portrait Of An American family too. It's got a cool scuzzy vibe to it, less measured and theatrical than his later work. "Lunchbox" is a banger, and there's a bunch of moments that are genuinely fun, which Manson seems to have lost sight of as being an important bit of his schtick.

GAOG > Portrait > Antichrist > MA > Holy Wood

I don't know shit about anything after 2003 or so. That one he put out in 2007 was so fucking boring; I tried it several times over several years and I can't. Nothing since GAOG has held any interest for me.

Yeah, Mechanical Animals is my favorite as well. I generally like his glam-inspired stuff more than his thrash industrial metal material, though I enjoy a lot of that as well.

Golden Age has some snoozers but it also has Spade which is one of his best tunes

After Lest We Forget, Manson has as much legitimacy to the name as Billy does using SP 2.0 in my book, and I mean that in both a semi-complimentary and utterly damning way. There's the odd gem off GOAG, EMDM, THEOL - and TPE was a fairly decent work for which I thank Tyler Bates - but I've grown increasingly put off of the output, not to mention Manson's character. Heaven Upside Down was an embarrassment.

They were fucking unstoppable up through Holy Wood though. My #1 high school band.

When the name of the band is your own stage name I think it kinda gives you the lifetime golden ticket as far as legitimacy is concerned

Bah. He can tout the name around all he wants. Daisy's dead, Twiggy's career is finished, Pogo's out of the music biz and both John 5 and Ginger are happy with Rob Zombie. And Trent would probably rather do an Option 30 or Exotic Birds reunion tour than produce another one of his albums.

He ran off, abused and alienated every single person who helped him realize his vision and brought him up to the top. Sounds familiar.

(If you can't tell, I feel the same way about Brian the way a lot of people do about Billiam.)

Just cause I hadn't thought about him tbh, plus that part of my brain is tied up in keeping tabs on which of the musicians i've actively listened to in the last decade are equally shitty people

Time is a weird thing y'all.

For instance, it blows my mind that Black Panther was only released this year. To me it feels like it's been out for years.

Delores O Riordan of the Cranberries also died this year; I completely forgot about it until B. mentioned a Cranberries song yesterday.

Antichrist Superstar helped me survive high school (ha). Holy Wood was the last one I bought and I don't recall listening to it much, I'm somewhat interested in revisiting it. When it's all said and done Mechanical Animals is probably my favorite. Loved Portrait of an American Family for many years but haven't listened to it in a long time. Now I'm wondering what that would be like? Played the hell out of the Smells Like Children EP. I thought Remix & Repent sucked and haven't listened to it much. Had a bunch but not all of the singles through the MA era with Lunchbox being my favorite for the "Down in the Park" cover. Had a bunch of soundtracks '97-'99.

RIP Marilyn Manson (circa 1989-2000)

Edit: Most of these Compact Discs are probably in storage somewhere so I just download something when the mood strikes.

Looking through his discography I remembered I actually have listened to one of his newer albums, High End of Low. Doesn't seem to be one of his most popular but I know I enjoyed some of it (Leave a Scar in particular) might revisit that one & listen to Mech Animals and Golden Age soon

This tours page is kind of interesting. Never got to go to the Dead to the World tour but bought the VHS which was a bit of a prized possession for a while. Did get to catch a show on the Mechanical Animals tour and that was amazing (damn, 7 days after Columbine ). Now I remember The Last Tour on Earth CD and the God Is in the T.V. VHS. Geez, I used to be way into this guy/band.
