Default What would Billy have to do to get you to like him again? Or at least to forgive him?

Get it off your chest, folks.

For me:

*Apologize to D'Arcy and reinstate her as the band's full-time bassist.
*Listen to criticism
*Make interesting music again
*Apologize for a lot of the asshole things he's said and done over the years
*Sing like himself in live performances.

I think his voice is just shot at this point. To be fair I think Billy has come a long way the last couple of years. He seems to get along with his bandmates more, and at least to an extent has begun to acknowledge their contribution. At this point, what drives me the most crazy is all this stuff about him creating personas to provoke and communicate and whatnot. All of that is such crap, and Billy couldn't pull it off in a million years. He's just not a person who's personality sells or provokes anything. It's all about the music and the band.

Idk man, the way he handled the D’Arcy situation in regards to the reunion really suggested he hasn’t got any better. She is a sensitive and proud person and clearly had nearly twenty years of bad feelings built up towards him and he did very little to make her think those feelings were misplaced. She made it clear she misses the person he used to be and being in the band in her interviews but she is not willing to be disrespected and marginalized. He really did little to make her feel he had changed.

- give more interviews like in 2017 or so where he sounds maturely reflective on the band
- put out all the bullshit he said he would

BONUS:
- no more weird right wing shit
- reconcile w/ d'arcy to some degree

I definitely wish D'arcy was back. I know you're a huge D'arcy fan. I am too and know its a fact that none of the songs or albums would exist if D'arcy wasn't there. I think in terms of the reunion, Billy was being relatively fair with having her start small. But then again maybe he could've waited a year before launching the reunion tour and had her play with them. Tough to say. I just don't know enough about the situation

Yeah I thought the interview on Studio Q was especially good

I think he should have flown out to see D’Arcy and taken James with him if he was really serious about reconnecting with her. If she wasn’t ready I think he should have waited. The fans wanted all four of them and that’s what Billy made us think we were getting. This had to be done right and he really blew it by not filling D in about her role early enough and starting to record without her knowledge. She became upset after that and Billy did not do a good job of calming her down at all. She deserved to be a full member because that’s what she always was.

Yeah, the reunion did seem pretty rushed, would've been interesting to know what the considerations were for wheeling it out the way they did. Obviously not so much a reunion than welcoming James back tour. At least Billy got taught a lesson when he learned just bringing James back would increase his crowds and sales by a lot.

My number one fault with Billy is that he is so inconsistent with his art. The level of execution and effort is very marginal now compared to what we had during the classic era. I honestly believe the same level of creativity is still within him. He's just lost that crazy drive and focus. He's obviously too old to harness that level of discipline again. Very common to the "old rich guy" syndrome and he is a big sufferer of it. Backwards Clock Society, Spirits in the Sky, Teargarden, Oceania all had good bones and there is a great album in there if he had put in the same level of work. My second grievance is that he works with the same mediocre producers and he honestly believes he is a producer/audio engineer himself. Vintage "holy grail" gear, sacred studios built on hallow grounds doesn’t mean shit if it's sterile and improperly mixed. Get Jimmy, a dozen good songs with fleshed out parts and lyrics, get a real producer. I’m not asking for SD 2.0, but return to the dynamic rock with the warm fuzzy goodness wouldn’t freaking hurt. Interesting production, drop the strange vocal pronunciations and for the love of music stop with the acoustic strumming songs. Also, this weird approach where it’s like BIG HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT and then absolutely nothing for a year is absolutely malicious. Correcting a few of these would put him in a better spot for me at least.

as great as it would be to see Pumpkins with D'arcy again, it's getting a bit fucking ridiculous to insinuate she should go from, what, a 20 year absence from not only the spotlight, but the music business as a whole (oh sorry, she had the stint with Grave Next Door) to full-time bassist for a band that's touring fucking stadiums, lmao? is any of this really even based on anything other than utter 20-year-old nostalgia & a suspicion that she was the super magical spark behind the entirety of his best work in the 90s?

in short: come the fuck on

True enough that there's plenty of other bands and albums to listen to. I just discovered Downward is Heavenward by Hum and can't stop listening to it.

Honestly this. I'll listen to everything he puts out once, but he just keeps on shooting himself in the foot.

Give me the remaining reissues and I can finally move on.

I know right? I just found out the album didn't sell and they just quit and got day jobs. Come to think of it that's probably what Billy needed to keep from going crazy.

-Quit shitting on people who like your most renowned works
-Accept the fact you are quite capable of making three star albums and recognize that consensus is you have (to be generous)
-Develop real humility and quit faking it

Gosh this would go a long way wouldn’t it

Best u can say these days is “woah that interview wasn’t so bad” but then u get 4 or 5 terrible ones. Can’t even read interviews by big willie anymore, even as comedy. It unduly pollutes my enjoyment of the classics

I have an idea. I'm picturing a setup like the campaign workers for Mike Bloomberg, who took his money and then actively campaigned for other candidates while on the job.

I will take Billy's money and stop talking shit about him in public, but secretly continue to undermine him and promote Two Gallants. And then very abruptly he'll stop paying me months before he promised he would and take away my health insurance, and I'll go back to openly hating him.

But that month or so where everything's going full-steam ahead, hot damn

Unacceptable. You must also praise the Bald Lord in public and tell everyone you know that SOSBV1 was the greatest album of all time and that D'Arcy is a useless jerk who is just jealous of the Bald Lord's successes since she exited the band.
