some thoughts

1) early Shakira is good. Haven't heard her newer music except the big hits. I don't understand anyone saying she has a bad voice. She has a great voice and is one of the most distinctive singers in popular music for sure.

2) Don't Wanna Miss a Thing is a terrible song but it's also a great song.

3) Tay is queen, I'm glad some of you can appreciate her

you're not understanding her persona though. She is supposed to exist at this intersection of credulous small town good girl and sex symbol, sort of as one coming from one world into the other. There are a lot of themes of being a young adult and slowly becoming wiser and more worldly on 1989.

I got that good girl faith in a tight little skirt

but even in wildest dreams, she sings "no one has to know what we do / his hands are in my hair, his clothes are in my room," and there's also a lyric about being tangled up all night. And red lips, probably referring to her signature bright red lipstick, is probably supposed to invoke experience more than innocence.

I was looking at the top 100 a couple of days ago to find a pop song for a friend's graduation video and it was baffling to me how people can enjoy music with such meaningless lyrics, or so few lyrics - like just the same stanza repeated over and over with a couple of words drawn out with the autotune device thing.

Next to that shit Tay Tay looks like a goddamn child prodigy, I gotta say.
