lightning strikes is a song of contrasts
the bit where he singings "I stumble brightly" and the whole thing literally stumbles is the funniest and unfunniest thing in an SP song
the bit with nicole singing sounds legit nice
there's the bit that sounds like power rangers transforming that's prob the worst melody in an SP song

Have you ever met a person in the flesh who listens to the new stuff?
Weirdly, on two separate occasions, both my roommate and one of my other friends (who aren't really SP fans outside the hits) have asked me what I thought of the Cyr stuff since one of the songs popped up in their Release Radar on Spotify and they dug them. For one of them it was Ramona but I don't know what song my other friend listened to. I don't feel strongly either way about the new stuff but I guess it's working for some people.

I don't think Billy appreciates how little people paid attention to Teargarden & the b-sides / live / demos Machina onwards.

He could re-record some of this stuff or put Tom Tom on a new album and it'd be a new track for most people.

Owata needs some of those synths muting and it'd be fine. Lightning, Stitch, Freak and Cottonwood too.

There's half a good album on TG with a little reworking.

Teargarden gets better with age, by virtue of the fact that it's better than what we're getting now. Tom Tom, Owata, Lightning Strikes, even the Fellowship. I've always liked Astral Planes, and A Song For A Son came out the day my second child was born which was kind of cool, so I have a link to that.

If these had been proper one off singles, or an EP, and not wrapped up in the whole "44 songs for free" thing, it would've been different.
Owata is bad but overall yeah I agree

Widow sounds like Hummer @Pink Pop 94' compared to Sammy Sammy or any of the other new singles.

anyone who cares what a person getting paid to judge music is wrong

it's inherently gross and bad. connecting to music and loving a record or band is an incredibly intimate special thing and not something to be bullshitted around with for a fucking blog

It's out there at the moment, having a listen to the tracks that haven't come out yet... would go into more detail but really there's not much difference between these songs and the rest, they blend into each other so much

I don't even follow music criticism myself, but I still think this is a bad take.

I just finished the album, this statement is what I would have made. It's literally the same song over and over.

You really shouldn't eat at Taco Bell. The sodium contents of an average meal is more than you should consume in 3-4 days.

Boy he is really leaning into these moments where the music drops out and it's just vocals, so many vocals.

What I always hoped for from the Smashing Pumpkins was to bring forward that late-era Muse sound and song titles combined with late-era Pet Shop Boys, but with no drum breaks for 20 songs.

This is, by an order of magnitude, the worst thing he has ever released. I'd rather listen to Ogilalalalala or Teargarden, and I can't believe I'm saying that.

Billy's target listener audience are the carnival barkers.

It's amazing, if he had made the completely opposite decision for everything on this album it might have been decent. I can't even get through more than halfway through these songs.
