Default Real Love appreciation thread

Probably the last SP song that made me feel something. An idyllic love story buried under whirls of hazy guitar

Can't believe they never did it live

if you're gonna do a thread as redundant as this at least say something interesting about the song

thoughts on topics:

- verse melody is flaccid and ineffective

- while i enjoy the white hot burst of soundz, its persistence quickly fatigues

prechorus and outro are pretty alright

also, "real love, or is it me you're after" is a nice line

Overcooked to hell, but love it just the same. One of the memories I have back from 2001 or so was hearing this for the first time and going "holy fuck, these guys are gone forever" and having it really sink in.

It's still hard for me, 17 years later, to wrap my head around the fact that there's this whole other Pumpkins album past Machina I. What many of the poppier parts of Machines of God could have been: dreamy, shoegazed, alternative rock.

An underrated aspect of this song: Jimmy's drumming. Gives texture to the wall of sound. Whole thing builds to a nice crescendo.

The ZuZu's version shows that there's a real Pumpkins song underneath it all, too.

yeah jimmy makes the whole thing explosive as fuck. he really is one of the greatest rock drummers out there, and of all time.

sometimes i switch on the kitchen vent when i cook, and it fills up the sound spectrum with an all consuming, whooshing air sucking sound. every time i switch it off, that letting off, the vapor trail of the sound attack that's like a missile shooting off into space - it reminds me of how Real Love ends. no other band or song that i know of ever achieved quite that cool effect.

personally i'm a big fan. i kind of wish we had a really nicely properly mastered version, but let's be honest - if you are a tr00 fan, the blazing attack of static, brickwalled noise is sort of part of the song's charm by now.

He really is. To me the ideal drum part, ideal sound, ideal sensibility and poise, is, 90% of the time, just what Jimmy does. Real Love has one of those weird offbeat snare patterns, like on Pissant and Chrysanthemum. that I can't quite play. It's brilliant.

Machina really heavily features these lovely uplifting, whirlwind choruses. There's a sort of giddiness to them, especially after the bleakness of Adore. The band's back together and we're blasting off to the heavens.

Machina and Mellon Collie both do this thing where they make you feel nostalgic for a time period that you never experienced, that may not have existed. The artwork, the orchestration, the lyrics all come together to create this. It makes other albums just sound like some songs. Maybe that's Flood's doing

It's cool. I would like to hear a version with less white noise on the reissue, if it ever actually happens.

ah, nice -- was thinking yesterday that i'd probably prefer this song acoustic and was wondering if some machina-era demo had ever seen the light of day

And sorry soak corker but the meandering mumbling melodies of the verses also work perfect for me. so shoegazy sounds like he's falling asleep.

i really like this song.

A lot of people complain about his voice but I hate when he bangs on the guitar like an uniformed 14 year old performing a sloppy cover

it's like the perfect shoegaze song, tbh.
it's such a massive wall of noise, you can't even tell what instruments are playing.

is sounds like a mix between a synth and heavily processed guitar, but doesn't really sound like either. i'm still not sure exactly what's going on in there.

my only real issue with the song. the wall of sound exhausts my interest pretty quickly. as a result it's about a minute too long.

Good song. But I still feel that lmgtwty should have been on the greatest hits, not real love. then push lmgtwty as a single to promote the GH album. You can't sell RL as a radio friendly tune like you could have lmgtwty. and seeing how "proud" bolly was of the reissue lmgtwty, I wonder what the thinking was behind real love on the gh album, versus even CCS. RL wouldn't appeal to the casual fans that would have bought the gh album. They wouldn't understand the fuzz and white noise. Unlike us troo fans, living in the pass.

FWIW greatest hits was the first pumpkin album I got, when I wasn't even a casual fan yet, just wanted to check them out. Real Love was one of the few songs on the back half of the disc I liked. Hated all the Adore/electronic stuff

That version of real love is from a master source, right? like not an amateur vinyl rip

I always liked it, but never considered it a "top-tier" song, but I know a lot of people really love it. I remember a few years ago Jimmy mentioned in an interview that he considered it the best Smashing Pumpkins song, so that says something.

Billy seems unable to deliver anything Machina related. Probably because he knows we want it most. And it represents the end of his band.
