when i first heard 1979, i was like "uhhhh, is this the same smashing pumpkins i've known and loved the past few years"- i totally agree with themadcaplaughs. i was actually turned off by it at first. i felt it was pop dribble and i was annoyed. but after a few listens it realy grew on me. the video actually added to it too- it made me appreciate the song more. i felt like i could identify with the characters- who can't relate to making out in a shower, tp'ing a tree and throwing patio furnature in a pool? okay so maybe i didn't do ALL those things, but they're typical teen things to do!
having all the remixes was cool too. |

I kind of know what you feel like i_adore_adore; although I heard the studio version early, I saw the performance of the song at the December 2nd Metro show on Youtube and could not believe it was the same thing.

god.
my 15 year old self would have probably been in love with i_adore_adore. we'd talk about every song and exchange stories my 25 year old self, however, thinks she is one of the worst people here. |

I wouldn't complain!! I adore this song... SO much. I think it's one of the most underrated SP songs of all time. It's just so headache-inducing and so full of pure, passionate anger and hatred (self-hate included). I just love everything about this song.

i wonder if he'll ever write anything like this again? he doesn't come across as being as angry as he did back then. I wonder if he still has this kind of passion?

He's probably come to terms with a lot of things over the years... which is good for him, but I wouldn't mind a song like this or "God" every now and then

a lot of people don't like TOASE and its gotta be the lyrics and vocal treatment, otherwise this song has great rifs throughout. i especially love the guitar on the "i'd die just to be real" part, the way they just 'jump' i guess. also dig all the noise especially during the "everyones lost just waiting to be found" part.

TOASE is amazing. In my experience (playing it for people), the vocals/vocal treatment are the real turnoff. The lyrics are kind of crazy, but the parts that are coherent are very powerful, some of the best lyrics on MCIS. I love the guitar in the choruses too, that just keep ascending and ascending.

this is the song that made me fall in love with mcis. i was 13 i think at the time and in the summer my family took a road trip to canada from texas. my disc man broke on the trip and all i had was a little magnavox boombox that i popped some batteries in and listened through the headphone jack. i must have listened to this song a hundred times on repeat. it was just orgasmic.
there is a verse of lyrics that arent printed in my booklet but they are on spfc. wish i knew what they said. that has always been my favorite part. |

shut up, that was two days ago... jeez.
I remember one time in 8th grade (there's that terrible year again...) I was going on a field trip and sat next to this boy named Steven. I didn't really like him, but he was sorta nice to me sometimes. He asked what I was listening to, so I let him hear "Tales." He took the headphones off and handed them to me... he sorta had a, "Jesus woman, don't murder me" look on his face. It made me smile a bit... |

If you can tell a story that happened two days ago, why can't I comment on a post from two days ago?

One of the things you always hear about Billy Corgan is that no matter how strange or mean he can be, the man truly does not alter his music just for the sake of popularity; Tales of a Scorched Earth remain the best example of that mentality I have. Who else could write a song that has the lyrics, "..you're all whore and I'm a fag" and still be taken seriously. It is songs like these on Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness that really make me think what a strange, emotional journey making those albums must have been. It is like he says in Graceful Swans of Never, he really laid it all out on those two albums.
As i_adore_adore said, the fact is we're never going to get songs like that again. It is the rage of all his child hood finally unleashed. No matter how miserable Billy says he is, or we want him to be, that was a once in a lifetime song. |
