Time for me to get into the Flaming Lips
Where should I start? I know nothing about them, but I'm intrigued.

First off: they are (presently) a three-piece rock band from Oklahoma. They've been around since the early Eighties and are that rare breed of band that has gotten better with age; their first really solid album, In a Priest Driven Ambulance, didn't come out until 1990, I believe.
They are one of those bands that constantly changes their sound, so it's very difficult to pigeonhole a few representative songs. With that in mind, I'll give you some recommendations from each album from In a Priest Driven Ambulance on; if you like that I can give you recs for their early stuff., In a Priest Driven Ambulance Unconsciously Screamin' Five Stop Mother Superior Rain What a Wonderful World Hit to Death in the Future Head Talkin' Bout the Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues (Everyone Wants to Live Forever) Halloween on the Barbary Coast Frogs Transmissions from the Satellite Heart Turn It On Pilot Can at the Queer of God Be My Head Slow Nerve Action Clouds Taste Metallic Placebo Headwound Guy Who Got a Headache and Accidentally Saves the World Christmas at the Zoo The Soft Bulletin (my favorite album of all time) Race for the Prize Buggin' Waitin' for a Superman Suddenly Everything Has Changed Feeling Yourself Disintegrate Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (their new album, released this past summer) Fight Test One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell Are You a Hypnotist? |

the name of this thread is absolutly retarded. its as if you are deciding that you will like them with out even listening to them. thats retarded, and thats wrong with music on the radio today. all the teeny bopper kids and shit surely one day said, i think its time for me to like avril lavinge(sp). having a state of mind like that about music, you're just feeding the industry of cool. ask for some suggestions. let your mind decide if you like them, not the rest of the board talking about them. i just realized this board is like a miniture TRL. Lame as hell, and all about being Indier than thou.

is that album with 4 discs that are meant to played simulataneously worth getting? I've been sort of interested in getting it, as I already have Yoshimi and the Soft Bulletin and really enjoy both of those.

thanks for the suggestions, everybody.
McCollum, I'd appreciate you not flaming me when you only have your own arrogant assumptions to go on. First of all, no where in my post did I say why I wanted to get into them, yet you assumed it was because other people think they're cool. In actuality, there are many reasons why I'd like to give them a listen, one being that several of my close friends who know my musical tastes said I would like them, another being that I'm seing them with Beck in a few weeks and would like to know a bit of their output before seeing them, a third being as i said that they've done a few things that intrigue me, such as the idea of releasing a 4 cd album to be played simultaneously; none of these reasons have anything to do with other people thinking that they're cool. Second of all, I made this post because they have such an extensive recording career, and I thought maybe there would be an album that would be a good introduction. I've done that before with this board and have always ended up liking what was suggested and was glad that I went that way. Furthermore, maybe I should have worded the title of the thread differently; I would never be ingnorant enough to think I'd like something without listening to it first. I should have said, "Time for me to give the Flaming Lips a listen." Nevertheless, that is no reason for you to lash out with your assumptions about me when you have no idea what I'm thinking. I agree with you that it is stupid for people to like something just because other people do, and it is a big problem in the music industry, especially now, but it has been for a long time. This, however, is not what I do, and I fail to see how you got that impression of me without assuming anything. In addition, I normally wouldn't be that ticked off by a response like yours, but I was having a really bad day, and you added to it. Please, don't ever make an assumption about me or anyone else again. |

i wasn't just speaking to you, although i guess it seemed that way. i started off talking about you but then as you can see my statement sort of spread to ******* all of nethporia. if you've been here, even just for a couple of weeks you surely have noticed how things are around here. thus my statement on comparing it to TRL. not everyone is like that here, thats why i stick around from time to time, that and to get music info. But, i apologize if you aren't like the rest of the tards here. as you will surely will agree with me, there are plenty. take it easy and enjoy beck. oh and yeah i seen so many posts started off like yours, other times people saying i must get into so and so band. so much bandwagoning around here.
