Vinyl Folks - god fucking dammit
Manufacturing defects in brand new records are the worst. The only thing that really annoys me about vinyl. Slight popping doesn't even really annoy me, but skips kill me.
I got a shrinkwapped Tool - Lateralus vinyl, and 3 of the sides play perfectly, but side 2 with schism and parabol/parabola, despite 3 thorough cleanings, still skips in the exact same 3-4 places. Fucking ridiculous. Any of you dudes have experience with this. |

ugh. isn't that a pretty limited pressing or did they make more.
i've had the experience more than once. i hate when it's warped. like the wage slave left it under the heat too long while shrink wrapping it. annoying. |

it's fairly limited, you can get it for around 40, which is what I got...
it doesn't appear warped, and I can't eyeball anything that's making it skip...just a groove problem I guess. it's just like...fuck...i'm not gonna return it to the amazon seller...i just feel fucked. same deal with the sealed adore lp I got a few years ago...skips in to sheila and appels + oranges |

Could it be your cartridge? Or your counterweight?
My Adore LP skips too sometimes, with my Audio Technica table, it skipped on almost every song. But now I have a Project Debut III and it didn't skip as much, only sticked over and over again on Shame. |

Picture discs have slightly lower quality than real vinyl records. My 'Come As You Are' 12" picture disc sounds horrific, but it might need a good cleaning.

My copy of Adore skipped right out of the package. I also got two records that weren't trimmed right, kinda egg shaped.

yea sounds like you need to adjust the skating
i thought my copy of machina was "defective" until i got a good turntable - i have only heard of this happening on major pressing albums which leads me to believe if its a "defect" it only exists in the amount of bass frequencies (modern music has tons of bass) making the player rumble and the needle jump. try a shock absorber. |

siamese dream reissue has a bit of noise during the beginning of 'mayonaise.' also, a copy of ashrae fax's static crash (underrated dreampop from 2003 or so) clicked a lot throughout side a. manufacturing defects on brand new records are the PITS.

anyone have the Feels LP (animal collective)? Side 4 is completely fucked and I think that was for the whole pressing, has there ever been an improved version?

i've been fascinated with discogs.com. they're asking 200 dollars for a Meshuggah - Catch 33 double picturedisc that i also have and played once.

not as overpriced as say, musicstack/gemm. some deals on discogs. some people seem pretty high over there with the prices they charge.

My tone arm doesn't have any weight adjustment...so I taped a penny on top of the motherfucker (yes yes not ideal I know) and it plays like a dream |

well still one tiny skip in "schism" but it fixed all the other skips. I'll just attribute that skip to fucking picture disc manufacturing

Oh, new albums on vinyl are mixed louder, that might be the problem.

Is it bad for the vinyl if it skips on one player but not another? There are myriads of ways that they can be set up improperly, and most of those things aren't good for the vinyl.

Pic discs are probed to skipping and defects. Inhave probably 100-150 pic discs and I'd say a third of then are fucked
Add to that you have multiple songs on one side (narrower grooves) and the probability of a bad press is pretty easy |

Drum and bass went through a big pic disc phase in 2001-2003
A lot of them I had to buy the regular pressing because the pic discs were pressed on a lesser weight for the pic disc. If you want a pic disc to be good had to be on a heavier weight and still only have one song or so per side on a 12". I have a few 10" pic discs and even with 1 song they're still shitty presses Problem is pic discs are mostly made in top of an existing vinyl and not pressed on the image. Makes for shallower grooves... If it has 3 tunes on a side they're now shallower and narrower |
