Well I listened to a few albums all the way thru and there was nothing intelligent about them.

Now all the bourgeoisie
They hate our crazy scene
'cause we dig pop-sick stickers
We like weaker tea"

My favorite lines from the Fall song I have on repeat right now

"Peter Cook's jokes, bad dope, check shirts, lousy groups
Point their fingers at America
Down pokey quaint streets in Cambridge
Cycles our distant spastic heritage"

Well certainly not on their lyrics probably you couldn't judge them (for one if youre not reading them, you probably cant understand them) that well but i feel listening to a band for a couple of hours, meaning probably in fall's case at least four records (IF one isnt skipping any song after like 30 seconds), should be enough to be able to make a more or less fair judgment on the band. Or any band. Any band i need more than 2 hours to know if i'm kinda into isn't actually worth me trying to get into.

I did listen to the fall for about half of like 5 records once, i think it's fair enough a try to say i'm not into them. I kinda knew that after 2 or 3 songs actually to be honest. I understand the idea that some bands are like "beautiful messes" but i generally don't like that type of band. For one in the fall i feel the message is more important than the music. Which is fine but not my thing. In fact nowadays i find it hard to give a shit about any message in music at all.

Impeccably put TEB. I definitely mirror that sentiment.

When I was younger I'd be all inspired by a bands message or what they stood for, but now I couldn't care less about that shit. It's mostly all just posturing by the artist anyways. If I'm going to want to learn about something or be educated I'm not going to turn to music to try and achieve that. It's mostly just the emotional content of the song/lyrics that resonates with me.

It's totally fair to say you don't dig them, but after a few hours trying to make any assessment about them other than your own personal tastes is fucking retarded

If I'm not going to make an assessment based on my own opinion then what am I going to base it on?

I don't even get why they call it "post-punk". It sounds pretty punk to me: sloppy instrumentation, erratic/unorthodox vocals, generally upbeat tempo, message based.

I took issue with you calling them "unintelligent" (which is fucking hilarious coming from you) rather than saying what EB said "I can't get into t**** which is totally fair

Well it's no surprise that an unintelligent, young fellow such as yourself would find them so thought provoking.

From what I've heard from the Fall a lot of it is the typical political-punk commentary voiced by an angry young man. Sure it's passionate and has it's merits, but it's hardly political science we're talking about here.

It's not about the politics, it's about the words themselves

Let me try and explain The Fall to someone who thinks Kiss is the greatest band of the 70's.

Yeah, this is stupid

There was a quote in that documentary that you linked about Mark's lyrics (and I'm paraphrasing here) that he has an incredible ear for the mundane that everyone else doesn't notice or takes for granted.

To me that sums up what is particularly striking about the lyrics

I just love the guy's dedication to the literary side of things.

A lot people say you can't write lyrics the same way you write poetry or that lyrics don't really matter but The Fall fly right in the face of that

i love how despite there being an entire current thread on the fall, a page and a half of the weezer thread is spent talking about them

also talking about things i love and the fall, i love how the fall can go through a hundred lineups and no one bats an eyelash while with certain other bands it's "life or death" and people never shut up about it (i don't even know why i'm pointing this out)
