He sold out. That's all. In that article, the mgmt of ravinia were pushing him to play certain songs, at least that's my interpretation of that article with ravinias owner. They wanted him to play the hits.
Not fair to have fans go crazy with dream set lists and then deliver with a greatest hits show. IMHO. Even to tease with the idea of "whir" and the winning set list thing, made everyone feel like this was gonna be unique. Unique-er at least. Having to go through the spfc.org list to figure out what songs to play. He could have just asked any random music exec what to play, which looks like what he did here. He did he exact thing he said he would never do. That's not like billy! |

Oh for Christ sakes. He only played a small handful of hits and left out a bunch of others. There was still a decent amount of surprises.
Lack of Gish though is screwy. |

In that case, not thrilled with what he did to muzzle. Somehow he managed to make such a hopeful song sound like it's drowning in despair and resignation. |

Eh. It's not even half the set.
Fans would have to be pretty naive to not expect some hits for a show like this, ESPECIALLY a career retrospective. The only shot we have of him playing only deep cut is if he throws together a one off at his coffee shop. |

Overall it was a great set that built up from very minimal performances to a very fun electronic section that ended with Ava Adore and got everybody on their feet. The only problem was the last section of songs played in a folkier way with guests (Sierra Swan and Ex Cops); it just felt weaker and unnecesary. I guess Corgan wanted to end the show with his friends but it just felt weird and weak compared to the rest of the set that was really strong and tight.
Does anyone know anything about the song As Time Draws Near? I cannot place it. It did sound somewhat like Mama from the residencies, but I guess it could also be from the Chicago songs. |

As Time Draws Near is a cover, a traditional song.
I really enjoyed it, I also think the setlist is a little obvious tho. Most of those songs have being played over the previous years. For example, He could have replaced Today or Disarm by Rocket, which is also a single/hit, but a less obvious choice. Crush, Whir or Suffer would perfectly fit in this setlist. This was a unique opportunity to play rarer songs, but Billy chose to play a safe set. That said, apart from Lonely Is The Name, I enjoyed every song! |

The setlist was great. Yes, I could have done without Today > Disarm and I was sure that it was just going to be another hit parade. The rest of the night I had no idea what was coming. \We got plenty of treats - 9 songs that had only been played once, or not at all and even more songs that haven't been played in almost 10 years.

There's a huge quality distinction between Muzzle on acoustic/piano and electric triplet fills kickass Muzzle.
Stop playing Muzzle acoustic please |

No real issues with the set. As others have said, he was bound to play some hits. It is an amphitheater show after all.
I am glad to see he pulled out "The Rose March." That still remains one of the best songs from 2007-2008 and one of the best songs he's written since bringing Smashing Pumpkins back. Never been keen on "Pinwheels" though. I do not know why he keeps pimping that song; it's one of the most forgettable he's written. If he wanted a TbK/Oceania era song that, in my opinion, would have had the same vibe, I'd say "Tom, Tom" or "A Stitch in Time." Beyond that though, no complaints at all. Cool to see Lonely is the Name (I REALLY wanted that one to be on Teargarden by Kaleidyscope) and a debut of a new song. Debut of "Methusela" is cool as well. |

Well I'll be damned if the solo in Burnt Orange-Black isn't the same solo as the 2000 live version of Blew Away.

billy corgan logic: end a show with a new song that isn't even on the new album and will probably never be released

i really hope he hears nothing but good about this and decides to just do this solo/friends jam shit.
it won't happen but goddamn i wish. just tour everywhere in smaller venues and just bullshit around, jam with even some famous local musicians as a surprise or something. |
