Both have some enjoyable songs. But i'm not a fan of either.

unfortunately, when it comes to what he actually produces, i'm often let down. NIИ stuff strikes me as silly. his soundtrack work is much more in the vein of my preferred aesthetic. mood pieces. non-songs. playing with structure and layering without obligation toward any convention.

it is a bit silly and formulaic

in a watered down spot between actual industrial music and metal

still cool if I happen to be in the mood for it

I dig Sonic Youth, but they have that whole "we're too cool for you" thing going on that doesn't always feel terribly justified. Easy to see why Elph is so in tune with them.

i prefer REM (yet another league) and don't like Radiohead. What a contrarian.

I'm the opposite I can't enjoy REM outside tracks here and there

Radiohead is like Pink Floyd of the 00's though, best super huge band

Moore is a lil pretentious but it's more mimicking a lot of the underground 70-80's guys that were uh organically cool

he's a punk superfan and the way he talks about groups like Swell Maps makes me smile

Eh, whatever. Like I said, I like the music, but the posturing I could do without.

Pixies got it right. They were dicks but they had the songs and the accessibility to pull it off.

I think Pavement is great as well

again I think it's more wanting to make music that's more in tune with punk/post punk/indie rather than classic rock throwback, not really pretension

Malkmus says about The Fall "Mark E Smith was my Wallace Stevens"

Mark E Smith replied by saying Pavement "didn't have an original idea in their heads"

he also suggested that Thurston Moore have his rock license revoked

Their songs have me climbing up the walls and I just consider myself lucky to not like them because it makes me want to have a blow out. When people bring up radiohead on the internet I just wanna learn how to disappear completely. I'd rather go to sleep have a nice dream, put on a videotape about killer cars to rest my scatterbrain, put on a motion picture soundtrack or even listen to the national anthem.

Yeah, I've never heard this either. Kim and the drummer were always outgoing and engaging with fans. Frank and Joey are a little more quiet and private, but I've never heard of any controversies about them acting like dicks or anything.

I've heard this about Pavement too, and I know it's only 1 experience, but Stephen Malkmus was one of the coolest, most engaging "rock-stars" that I've met. Took the time to hang out and shoot the shit with everyone 1 on 1 in the club after the gig... Signed whatever, took pictures. Dude was a blast.

i will say tho on topic of the recent conversation, Radiohead are one of a handful of bands where i actually have a physical reaction when people say they don't like them. nothing major, just a kind of minor recoil, similar to if someone just told me they were a devout scientologist or a heavy believer in the flat earth theory

Radiohead has their fair share of good songs, but I think a lot of their newer work is overrated...

Just not really into the guys vocal style anymore.

maybe I came to the scene a little late, but I always thought of Sonic Youth as a band no one was too cool for because every white dude at college knows a bunch of their albums

haha same, it's just a little surprising. Kind of the same way everyone shifts in their seats when someone says, "I don't like the Beatles."

it's more of a "there's something fundamentally different about you & i, and i'm not so sure i trust you anymore" kind of thing

mostly cos they were a central band in getting me into "alt music" i guess
