Thumbs down

In the Shadow of the Moon, on Netflix

I feel like a movie built on a mystery and twists like this needs to make sure the entire thing isn't obvious in like the first ten minutes. It'd be pretty cool if I'd never seen a movie or heard a story before! Also, like The Perfection, a drastically simpler version of a key character's plan would have saved a dude's entire life from being ruined.

Frankenstein (1931)

So one of my consultant projects recently, where I'm kinda sorting through some dialogues for machine learning purposes, has dialogue from some interviews with people talking about the original Universal horror "talkies" that came out around 1930. One that I've read about is Frankenstein and it got me interested in watching it.

A lot of what I read was how controversial it was and how, once the census board for movies was created, they removed certain lines (relating to knowing how it feels to be god) and some of the murder scenes (which are not graphic whatsoever, and mostly serve to show you that the monster did in fact kill someone).

This movie would probably be rated PG-13 today, and just barely. If it were animated it could easily be PG. In the era of fucking Saw movies and A Serbian Film and very disturbing horror, this is absolutely tame. Even if you tried to make it as disturbing as possible, it wouldn't be that bad.

That said, it's entertaining and certainly a good movie, but I'm so used to special effects and multiple story arcs (and just longer movies in general - this is 70 minutes) that it seems somewhat boring. BUT I can see how 1930s audiences who are just getting used to professionally produced horror movies with sound would be absolutely blown away by the entire thing. There is also nothing bad about it or overblown. It tells its story and that's it. It feels wrong to even rate this movie so I'm not going to.

What I'm saying is you should see it to appreciate history but it definitely feels primitive as far as movie making goes. And I guess it was. Can anybody suggest a modern version that I should check out?

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker - 3/5
Aside from two extremely dumb moments, it was an enjoyable romp.

The 30s/40s Universal fare is must-watch stuff for me every October. I believe Frankenstein and its sequel, Bride of Frankenstein, to be objectively perfect. Fight me.

But don't really, ok? I have weak arms.

I have yet to see Knives Out, and knowing that Rise of Return of the Jedi basically walks back all of Rian Johnson's work means that I can't financially support it until I see Knives Out and give the much better filmmaker/storyteller my money first.

Well Mr. Globes

I just also watched 1931 Dracula. And, despite liking the Frankenstein story better (generally) and wanting to like it more, I think Dracula is way better. At least the 1931 versions, Dracula hands down wins.

Sorry not sorry
