Oh you will hate me so very very much. I am a mandated reporter, and have had to report people who are a danger to themselves and others. You are a teacher, correct? That makes you mandated as well. Are you going to report dangerous people or help them?

Charter's exist solely because of the failure of regular public schools. They ain't all that different though from what I can see. Slightly more control for teachers and parents, somewhat more streamlined tax dollars to classroom ratio, and that's about it. They still work within the larger federal mandates many of which are inane and not practical let alone logistically possible.

That's a slippery slope argument. One could just as well say that prison is a dangerous concept because the state could use it to imprison dissidents with the claim that they are criminals. Some states have done or do that. To say that because of that, our countries shouldn't have prisons, would be silly, though.

I mean, yeah, any restrictions on the mentally ill's rights will have to be carefully scrutinized and debated. Not everyone who has any kind of mental illness is a danger to themselves or others. But to immediately jump to the conclusion that this is some plot to lock people away in FEMA camps is ridiculous.

I can imagine there are some people with mental illnesses that don't have thoughts of self harm and are no more likely to harm another than anybody else. It's probably specific symptoms and tendencies that are relevant to whether one should not be able to own a gun.

I realize all of this. But when someone is homicidal, suicidal, suffering PTSD with disassociation and flashbacks... they shouldn't have a gun. I'm not talking about people who suffer anxiety disorders.. or mental illnesses that are under control with medications and therapy, however, they will eventually take guns from people like this too.

Aren't you a mandated reporter? Would you refuse to report someone who clearly shouldn't have a gun?

Yes, but I've never come across such a situation nor have I met a teacher who has either, at least with unstable parents potentially with guns. Only the most extreme parental neglect or abuse gets a teacher motivated to notify CPS, and even then, laws are (rightfully) set up where its very difficult to remove children from their natural parents.
