i'd mostly skipped what you guys said about Stranger Things cause i don't want to read too many spoilers, but i just watched the first two episodes.
not sure if you you guys (excluding buzz) praised it as a legit great show, but lol it's really not. that's some of the worst writing i'd seen in quite a while. those dialogues are so bad it's enjoyable. i'm liking the overall 80's b-movie slasher film vibe, almost. totally called somebody getting murdered upon the sight of characters engaging in immoral activities such as drinking beer and making out. and the biggest lol goes out to that stock character creep taking remarkably terrible photos with his shitty camera of other teenagers having the kind of fun he'll never experience in his life while he's supposed to be looking for his presumably dead or molested little brother. not sure i can keep a straight face through 8 episodes of this stuff but let's see how bored i am tomorrow. |

Idk, I really enjoyed it. Thought the kids were fantastic, and had a ton of fun with the show.

yeah I dunno I loved it. I also thought the kids were fucking great, especially 11 and the kid with the dental issue.
it's a little confusing to me that someone can like the 80s vibe but then criticize the show for the 80s-esque dialogue and plot tropes |

also, generally speaking, there is an elusive quality that needs to be present for a homage to turn into something that is more than a collection of tropes and cliches. might be a slight sense of self awareness, an occasional breaking of a familiar mold, what have you. but if it just recites 80's ABC, there's no added value in that. but i'm just babbling, only seen two episodes. i'll probably rant more about this later. |

My feeling is that you will like the show less as it goes on if you are already sour to it.
For me I guess the show did capture that elusive quality. I can't think of anything else that so accurately references this particular temporal genre of sci-fi/fantasy/bildungsroman/adventure story. |

it's a great show. And it turns a lot of 80s film tropes on their heads. Mainly in the female leads. Ryder's character, for instance, is the complete opposite of the clueless mother that you see in a lot of films in the 80s. From beginning she's right and she presses forward despite being treated like a hysterical mother.
And unlike ET or Explorers or Stand by Me there's a girl included in the "gang" and she's a badass. then you've got Nancy, who plays against what would be 70s and 80s female horror movie lead, which typically means a good looking high school girl who gets laid and then chased around like a piece of meat by the "monster." Nancy never becomes a sex object, despite sleeping with her idiot boyfriend. Instead she goes on a crusade, not unlike Joyce's. It's Eleven, Joyce and Nancy who are the bad asses of the series. They're the ones that drive the plot forward and take all the risks. there are only a few memoralbe sci fi, horror films in the 80s that have even ONE strong female protagonist. This series really has 3. |

The show is well-written because it has some primary characters that are female and not weak? Wow, that's setting the bar high and totally wasn't already being done by Game of Thrones.
Stephen King's IT had a girl in the "gang," by the way. The small group of twelve-year-olds that take it upon themselves to try to root out the evil that's claiming children in their small town setting, no less. I wonder if directly referring to King in the script means that his work might have been an influence... |

Stranger Things Season 2’s New Characters
Max is a tough and confident 13-year-old female whose appearance, behavior and pursuits are more typical of boys than of girls in the era. She has a complicated history and a difficult relationship with her stepbrother, Billy, that's made her protective of her past and generally suspicious of those around her. She's also good on a skateboard, which she uses to get around pretty much everywhere. Billy is a super muscular, overconfident 17-year-old. He's so captivating and edgy that there are rumors flying around that he killed someone at a school he attended in the past. Billy steals peoples' girlfriends, is a drinking-game pro and drives a black Camaro. But his violent and unpredictable nature shows itself to those closest to him, especially to ones who are younger than he is. Roman, meanwhile, is described as a male or a female of any ethnicity between the ages of 30 and 38. After growing up homeless with a drug-addicted mother, he or she suffered a great loss at an early age and has been seeking revenge ever since. Roman is ultimately an outsider who doesn't understand how to connect with people. |

sometimes i'll get stuck somewhere with a real tv ... and suddenly a woman will be late for that big meeting b/c an exceedingly unpleasant redheaded woman with wild eyes in a strangely porny nude suit (looking like a grotesque slim goodbody https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l_dAvzm0B.../476459696.jpg with intestines and colon hanging off her) is dancing in her cubicle with a superman cape, then wheel her in her office chair over to the ladies' room, then even follow her all the way to the doctor, where she hisses, gnashes her teeth when the talk turns to IBS meds just makes me sad in my heart Last edited by run2pee : 09-19-2016 at 11:18 AM. Luke Cage premieres in a couple weeks. Already planned out a viewing party for that, hope the show is good.

It took me a couple of episodes to get hooked on Stranger Things, but I liked it by the end. You could see all the cogs turning but that's commercial TV for you, if you want something better than that...you might be looking in the wrong places with a Netflix series.
I thought it ripped things straight from Stephen King. And others, too - there were a few times when it felt like they were acknowledging things outright, though of course I can't think of anything now. Also, Nancy is anorexic, like actually. She looks it, anyway. Did you think so, Scotty? She had the same look Ellen Page did in Juno, all the fat gone from her face, and just so, so narrow. It was sad. I hope she gets help. Or maybe she's ok. |

I wondered that too. She just seems way too thin for her frame. A little bit of the bobblehead look.

i'm starting to enjoy Stranger Things now. the third episode was pretty good. i just stopped taking it seriously at all. it's just kind of enjoyable how it stitches together all these tropes and references to movies and shows from the 80's and 90's: X-files (the mysteriously elusive evil g-man who's conducting mysterious experiments), E.T. (i do wonder if there's a scene of the four children riding their bikes against the moon coming up), slasher films (the girl is even called Nancy, obvious nod to Nightmare on Elm St), slimy monsters, Degrassi Junior High, family sitcoms (nancy's flowery room decor - priceless) - it's all there.

watched all 6 episodes of "Fleabag" this week on Amazon. Great series. Doesn't look like it's getting a second season. Bummer. I would watch Phoebe Waller-Bridge do almost anything. Took me a full eposide to get used to breaking the 4th wall gimmick. But she does it rather brilliantly.

ep.5 of stranger things.
i like how sheriff hopper's strategy of getting into top secret CIA-NSA-FBI headquarters, where an alien lifeform is held, is going up there, lifting his hands up in the air going "hey, ho, ey..." and then punching a lone, undertrained security guard to acquire access to the premises. strong writing. |
