Considering that Johnson recorded these songs in the late 1930's, the distance between him and the first covers of his music (1950's by blues and jazzmen, 1960's by the Brits), isn't very long. Even though he was already revered as a mysterious legend by then, the first artists who covered his music weren't actually that far removed from him in time. Cream covering Johnson's "Crossroads" in the 1960s is equivalent to someone covering something from the 1980s today. In fact, it's been over double the number of years between our time now and the initial 1960's british invasion (50+ years), than it was between those guys in the 1950s-1960s and Johnson (only 20+ years).
For anyone who plays guitar, it's a bit like the hype that a 1959 Les Paul guitar has as being a "holy grail" instrument. You can only get that real "vintage" tone through one of those old guitars. Yet, when people like Clapton, Green, or Page were playing them in the 1960s, and recording those landmark tones, the 1959 Les Paul was less than 10 years old. |
