You Don't Know Jack - B
A Barry Levinson-helmed biopic about Dr Jack Kevorkian with Al Pacino playing Dr Death himself. Pacino thankfully trades in his typical bombast for Kevorkian's mild manored-yet-intense eccentricities and pulls off a convincing character study. While the majority of the film really pushes the pro-assisted-suicide cause, the third act turns and shows Jack to be a fairly flawed person (character?), pursuing his cause to his own destruction. Only qualm is an under-utilized John Goodman and Susan Sarandon who are relegated to the sidelines.

cinematography is outrageous, toni collette is fantastic, and some moments of it are so harrowing it feels like watching someone else's bad dream. like, it's got that G-force thing where it makes you feel like the ground is falling under your feet for a second. amazing stuff.
If you missed a few things during the film, the ending could seem way more left field - it seems like that's the way most people take it on first viewing (myself included) but really, they were leading up to it pretty well the whole time, second viewing of this movie was more satisfying for me

I enjoyed how different it was from the trailer, which made it seem more like a simplistic & linear kinda thing

Venom

Holy shit what a piece of hot garbage.

Came off like a very poor man's Deadpool. Had the tonal messiness of Deadpool (multiplied by a factor of about three) but simply wasn't remotely as interesting or funny in terms of story and characters, which is what sustained Deadpool despite its tone issues and made it a worthy watch. Tom Hardy's banter with Venom made the movie bearable, but just. So much of the movie was either non-sensical or hackneyed, or jarring; it legit seems like they switched writers halfway through the movie. It'll be obvious when that happens if you ever watch it.

Hardy and Venom deserve better than this pile. If this is the best Sony can do with their remaining stake in Marvel, just sell the full rights to Spider-Man to Disney.

Best part was the mid-credits scene with Woody Harrellson.

Watched Eyes Without a Face last night.

Nice little horror film with unnerving themes and creepy visuals. I thought that the practical effects of the face removal scene were really well done, except for how they failed to obscure the actor's real nose beneath the fake face that was removed.

Still, not that remarkable a film overall, IMO. I was expecting a bit more. I thought they could have done more with the implied psychological themes of identity, self-image, guilt, and narcissism, but the film doesn't really go much deeper than the base creepiness of the premise. It's all plot and doesn't really use that plot to develop any themes or ideas.

Some parts of it also made me kinda chuckle. The police department apparently doesn't have more than a single room, so the detective interrogates the shoplifting suspect in the same office that the police chief or whoever his superior is works in. The police, unable to identify their victim, also call in two family members of two different missing persons to ID her. Upon the first claiming it's his daughter, they take him at his word and don't even let the second take a look.

Overall, a fun thriller with striking visuals, but nothing behind the eyes.

Inside Llewyn Davis - A-
Yet another Coen Brothers film that seems to simply rely a bit too much on their previous works: the protagonist is part The Dude, part Barton Fink, part Tom Reagan; the soundtrack seems a bit derivative of O Brother; the lack of an actual plot is replaced by fast-talking characters; a random John Goodman we only see once for like ten minutes. Regardless, they have this all down to a refined art and this jumble of Coen tropes still somehow manages to coalesce into a near flawless film... or at least better than Burn After Reading or Hail Caesar!

It feels like one of those short stories that Stephen King optioned off for $1 in the 80s for budding filmakers, but the short story itself had a really ambigous ending and didn't even have enough meat for a full-length film. So the filmmakers had to beef it up a little (or a lot), and Stephen King didn't care because he just went and got some coffee with that $1 and never saw the piece of shit based on his 2,065 words anyways. Oh and Fred Durst is in this.

Resolution - I downloaded High Resolution by mistake and watched the first 30 minutes thinking damn this is a strange way to start a horror film. Then I realized my error.

Resolution was great. Massive mind fuck.

but yeah Burn After is pretty good

Don't know how some of y'all judge movies but it's certainly not w/ the admittedly simple but effective yardstick I use

Watched Fargo for the first time the other night & that movie is so perfect. There are still a handful of theirs I've never seen, think I'm gonna go for Hudsucker next

Ironically, Fred Durst was the best part of the film, as I remember it.

Fargo, Lebowski, and Farton Bink are their triple-headed peak.

I've only seen the first two.

I liked them. I dunno, neither movie ever once made me laugh out loud, but I still appreciated them on an "I acknowledge that was a good joke" level.

Fargo actually makes me laugh more than Lebowski, even though (or possibly because) it's not even the intended comedy of the 2
