Default The Zeitgeist Maniphesto...

Zeitgeist...
How many of you truthfully knew what this word meant before you heard it was going to be the title of the next Smashing Pumpkins album?
I had never heard the word before, I had no idea what Zeitgeist was or even how to actually pronounce the word...
but now i know what it is and I hope you do to,and if you don't I hope you'll take the time to go find out what it is, it amazes me that billy corgan is one of the only lyricists who ever makes me reach for a dictionary...
but the purpose of this thread isn't to exaine the word Zeitgeist, that would be a waste of time...although no matter what I write I'm sure there will be plenty of people here on Netphoria that will consider this post a waste of time, but this is something that I have been thinking about lately...
why did billy/jimmy/the smashing pumpkins name this album Zeitgeist?
Is it an attempt by Billy to make us aware of what Zeitgest is? does he want us to become conscious of what the spirit of our era/age is? what is the spirit of the times we live in? so what is the zeitgeist of our age/era: hedonism? greed? war? hatred? selfishness? love? freedom? apathy? empathy? Its different for all of us I know, we come from different states, cities, countries, societies, political systems, tribes and races...and at times it even seems some of us may be from other planets...but we are all connected here...conneceted in a way that is unique to this age and time...near instantaneous communication is possible now, linking so many different cultures and socities in a way that was never possible before in the history of the human race...but we still have wars, we still have people killing and dying for God and Country...

I think naming the album Zeitgeist is a blatant attempt by billy to get us to not only examine the age we live in, but to get us to examine how we can and do effect and influence the spirit of our age....
but I think naming the album Zeitgeist also serves another person, I think by making us aware of what Zeitgeist is they are trying to state 'this album is the smashing pumpkins attempt to influence the spirit of this age with our music...'
and to also inspire us to examine the lives we live and how what we do effects others and the world, to inspire us into action...
to inspire us to climb outside the walls we've built around ourselves...

we have the power dodetermine what our generations legacy be?
the human race is capable of so much but it seems hellbent on annihilating itself...
and most people don't care as long as it doesn't effect their lives...
self-important, self-centered, self-absorbed, self-obsessed, self-conscious whores...
is that what we are? is that what we've become?

shit all over this thread if you want...
i really don't care...
actions will always speak much louder than words...

its time for action people....

I am not spankarine....

and maybe I am looking into it way too much...or maybe you're not looking into it enough...who knows, people sometimes perceive and examine art on different levels...
maybe I'm looking too deeply into things and finding what i want to find, seeing what i want to see...

I didn't think it was possible *not* to know what 'Zeitgeist' means. Even if only having heard the term in the wonderful George Carlin quote "Don't take any shit from the Zeitgeist."

I would be more coherent, but when I look at your post I only see dozens of ellipses. They sort of draw the eye.

At this point it became apparent that you're an idiot. I continued on just for laughs:

Your undoubtedly masterful use of sarcasm is again overshadowed by all those FUCKING ELLIPSES. Do you have a couple of spastic extra fingers that can't stay away from the . key, or what? Are all your other punctuation keys broken, and the ellipsis is all that is left to you as you struggle to cry out on the internet and somehow make yourself heard? Inquiring minds want to know. Well, at least, I want to know. Polydactylism? Hobbled keyboard? What? What?

I have to say (flamed or not) that i think you are right.

No need to be sorry, I was just honestly and truly curious (also drunk).

The sad part is even with approximately 9485 ellipses per post, your internet communication is SO much better than most. Now that's depressing.

As for the original topic, I don't so much think BC was trying to make a political statement about our current Zeitgeist/Weltgeist as I think that he might have been trying to invoke the very concept of Zeitgeist itself. It's a powerful philosophical/anthropological concept, and an important one. Now, that's what I would like to think, but perhaps the ridiculous album cover already belays me. Sigh.

Maybe this is an American thing, but most anyone fluent in a language even remotely
connected to the germanic bransch wouldn't need to learn what zeitgeist means
because it would have read clear as day anyhow. Ok maybe Im exaggerating, but thats basically true.

It's not a "big word".

I mean, if the album was called "time ghost" or "time spirit", would you seriously
have a problem understaning what it means? Would you characterize the word in itself as some grand concept? No.

Flying of the handle upon hearing the word "zeitgeist" is like going dizzy over the word
"freedom" or well, perhaps even "ponies!1".

I admire your your disorder, though.

/Per

i think that the concept has more to do with the way the word was origionally used by philosophers then the fact it's germanic.

it means less perhaps to you because you understand what it means in a literal sence, rather then a philosophical one when you see it.

Culture makes all the difference in the world. Besides, from what I gather, Analyzing the theme of the ''Zeitgeist'' as it pertains to the album, is perfectly legitimate in my eyes, and it is like appels and oranjes to ''freedom'' or ponies! The concept is irrevocably deeper and more intimate. You, being European and ''connected to the Germanic bransch'' should realise this. Obviously you were joking when you said that it wasn't a valid point of discussion.
